Fans of Coronation Street are outraged by Roy Cropper’s “sudden” exit, which they say “doesn’t make sense.”

On Wednesday’s emotional episode, CORONATION STREET legend Roy Cropper said his goodbyes to the cobblestones.

Viewers were taken aback as the eccentric Weatherfield icon was driven away in a taxi, and many took to social media to question the abrupt exit.

Roy (David Neilson) has been a regular on Coronation Street since 1995, but his 26-year run as the friendly and eccentric cafe owner is coming to an end.

Roy decided it was time for a new beginning after he lied to the police to protect Abi Franklin (Sally Carman).

In an understated final scene, he left with his suitcase as his niece Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) pleaded with him to change his mind.

However, fans of the ITV soap complained that the plot was “underwhelming” for such a prominent character.

After it was discovered that Abi had the gun used by drug lord Harvey Gaskell (Will Mellor) to murder Natasha Blakeman (Rachel Leskovac), Roy ended up lying to officers.

Before Roy tracked her down and talked sense into her, she’d planned to use it to kill evil Corey Brent (Maximus Evans).

The gun was swept away in the sinkhole but eventually found its way into the hands of criminal Harvey.

Harvey fatally shot Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson) after mistaking Natasha for her.

Roy has been unable to forgive himself since he realized how traumatized Natasha’s young son Sam Blakeman (Jude Riordan) has been as a result of her death.

He became convinced that he needed to leave Weatherfield to escape his guilt, and despite Nina’s protests, he packed his belongings and left on Wednesday.

He announced his departure by stating that he would be working as a chef in South America.

“You’re as much a part of Weatherfield as those cobblestones,” Fiz Brown (Jennie McAlpine) told him.

Carla Connor (Alison King) pleaded with him to stay, saying, “There’s nobody on this planet like you.”

However, viewers complained that the soap icon’s exit was unrealistic.

“Is Roy really leaving it’s such a sudden storyline (hashtag)Corrie,” tweeted Mary.

“This doesn’t make sense,” Lil Peach observed, “certainly it’d take time to plan, and tel people, and so on?”

“It also makes no sense to me that roy would abandon Nina in her hour of need [cry emoji]i’m,” Kat commented.
