Alcaudete de la Jara, in the province of Toledo, is the Spanish town with the lowest housing prices.

According to idealista data, homes in the town cost on average 349 euros (£292) per square meter.

Alcaudete de la Jara has a population of around 2,000 people and is located just under two hours from Madrid, Spain’s capital.

Idealista has a three-bedroom apartment in the town for only 12,500 euros (£10,458), though it will need renovations.

Fuente Obejuna, in the lovely province of Córdoba, was Spain’s second most affordable town.

Fuente Obejuna is a small town near Córdoba with a sunny climate and a population of around 5,000 people.

At an average of 352 euros (£294) per square metre, homes in the town offered excellent value.

Expats who choose to relocate to Fuente Obejuna will be able to sample a wide range of culinary delights.

Carne de caza (game) and lomo de orza (stuffed pork dish) are two traditional dishes.

The town with the third lowest cost of living was also in Toledo province.

El Carpio de Tajo houses are only 357 euros (£298) per square metre.

El Carpio de Tajo gets its name from a historic castle on the Caprio stream’s banks.

“A very beautiful square with arcades and the occasional terrace,” one visitor said of the town’s plaza.

Carcamusa, a traditional stew made with beef, tomatoes, onion, and white wine, should be tried by British expats settling in Toledo province.

Zjar, in the southern province of Granada, was the fourth most affordable town in Spain.

The town, which is surrounded by mountains, has breathtaking views.

The average price per square metre in the town is 386 euros (£323), so there are plenty of bargains.

The Zjar spa, located in the foothills of the Jabalcón mountain, is a highlight of the town.

In 1928, the mineral-medicinal water of the spa was declared.

It is said to be beneficial for rheumatic and metabolic medical conditions, and the surrounding area provides excellent horseback riding and hiking opportunities.

Another beautiful town in Córdoba rounded out the top five cheapest cities in Spain to buy a house.

Belmez is a small town with a population of about 3,000 people and a median home price of $392.
