During the filming of ‘Dracula,’ Keanu Reeves clarifies his ‘wedding’ to Winona Ryder.
This week, Keanu Reeves addressed one of his career’s most persistent rumors: that he and Winona Ryder are married in real life because their on-screen wedding in Bram Stoker’s Dracula was supervised by a real priest. In a new feature with Esquire, Reeves addressed the fan favorite claim, admitting that Ryder is his wife by some measures. The charming actor seems unfazed by the truth.
Reeves said, “We did an entire take of a marriage ceremony with real priests.” “We’re [married], according to Winona.” We are, according to Coppola. So, I think we’re married… in God’s sight.” In the 1992 horror picture, Reeves played solicitor Jonathan Harker and Ryder played his fiancee Mina Murray. Throughout the story, Dracula (Gary Oldman) stands between the two, but this does not prevent them from exchanging vows.
Of course, Ryder has previously expressed her emotions about the “marriage.” Ryder told Entertainment Tonight in 2018 while promoting the rom-com Destination Wedding with Reeves that she considers him her spouse in no uncertain terms.
“In fact, we married in Dracula.” No, I swear to God, I believe we’re actually married. Francis [Ford Coppola] employed a real Romanian priest in that sequence,” she explained. “We shot the master, and he took care of everything.” So I believe we’ve tied the knot. “Don’t you remember that?” she asked Reeves after reminding him that they had literally said the customary vows “I do.” It happened on February 14th.” In what has now become a legendary viral video moment, Reeves said, “Oh my my, we’re married.” Reeves came on The Talk a few months later, saying that Ryder has fully committed to their marital duties.
“Every now and then, I’ll get a text that says, ‘Hello, husband,'” he admitted. “I didn’t believe her at first, but then Dracula director Francis Ford Coppola contacted Winona and publicly stated that, yes, that actually happened, the priest performed a whole ceremony, and Winona and I were married.” While Ryder appears to be pleased about the odd union, Reeves appears to be unconcerned. “I think we make a nice couple,” he told PEOPLE of Ryder, who he described as a “beautiful person and a talented actress.” Reeves is now promoting The Matrix Resurrections, which will be released on HBO Max and in theaters on December 22.
