In 1958, the life of Debbie Reynolds was turned upside down. Eddie Fisher, her husband, told her that he wanted to apply for a divorce.

The singer then left Reynolds for Elizabeth Taylor, her close friend and fellow actress.

Reynolds and Fisher had two little kids at the time – Carrie Fisher and Todd Fisher.

Reynolds said that rumors about his association with Taylor soon took over Hollywood before opening up about the affair.

“Once, Debbie Reynolds felt she was “happily married” to Eddie Fisher

After their agents set them up in 1952, Reynolds and Fisher met.

As Fisher had many songs which became hits, they were both at the height of their careers.

Moreover, in Singin in the Rain, Reynolds gained popularity for her role as Kathy Selden.

“Fisher and Reynolds became known as “America’s Sweethearts” after marrying in 1955. Reynolds gave birth to Carrie shortly after they exchanged vows.

The couple welcomed Todd into their family two years later.

“We were happily married at this point in our marriage. We had a wonderful son and daughter,” Reynolds told Entertainment Tonight in 1988. “But obviously I was wrong about that, you know? Again, that was my view. I was happy, I was in love, but he obviously wasn’t.”

How Debbie Reynolds heard about Eddie Fisher and Taylor’s Elizabeth

Things between Reynolds and Fisher started to change in 1958.

That February, in a plane crash, Fisher’s best friend, Mike Todd, was killed.

Todd was married to Taylor, whom he had met with Reynolds in high school. He went to Taylor’s house to console her when Fisher heard the news. Initially, Reynolds thought nothing about them spending time together.

“We were all best friends, so there’s nothing wrong with that,” said Reynolds.

Rumors about their relationship surfaced soon after Fisher started visiting Taylor’s home. Reynolds said people in the entertainment industry would gossip at many occasions about their union. At a dinner party, she learned that before she did, people knew about Fisher’s affair.

Eventually, while in New York with Taylor, Reynolds confronted Fisher.

I was the last one to hear of the affair.

There were signs in the media, and when I turned up alone at events or celebrations, I heard my friends whispering,” Reynolds told the Daily Mail. “While I didn’t want to find out the truth, I had to face it.

Yet, seeing them together was a massive shock. It left me feeling shaken.

Why did Debbie Reynolds wait to divorce Eddie Fisher for a year?

He asked Reynolds for a divorce when Fisher agreed to admit his wrongdoings. He said he and Taylor were in love and planned to start a family. Reynolds said she was profoundly impacted by her husband’s falling in love with another woman.

“I was a virgin when I married Eddie, but Elizabeth had been married three times,” said Reynolds. “I was devastated because I had two children.”

Not only was Reynolds heartbroken over her divorce, she also said it threatened her religious values. She acknowledged it was not her decision to end her marriage. Reynolds didn’t want to stand in the way of the happiness of her ex-husband, though.

I was really religious, so I didn’t believe in divorce, however,” she said, “they blamed me for holding them apart and true love. “So I let Eddie off the hook at last.” I ordered him to just go.
