Casino Royale by Ian Fleming is currently on sale for £95,000.
For £95,000, a FIRST EDITION of Ian Fleming’s inaugural James Bond novel, which the author recommends being read and burned, is up for sale.
The nicely bound edition of Casino Royale was given to the boss’s family, who had given him the time off to write it. When Viscount Kemsley agreed to give him every January and February off, he was working as a foreign news manager for Kemsley Newspapers. Fleming returned from his writing retreat in Goldeneye, Jamaica, with his novel.
He mailed the 1953 edition to the Viscount’s son Anthony, with the inscription “To Tony, read & burn.” Ian”
Only 4,760 first editions of Casino Royale were printed, making this copy very valuable due to Fleming’s inscription.
Peter Harrington, a London-based dealer, is selling the book in its original heart-covered dust jacket.
“Signed and personalized editions of Fleming’s first Bond novel are in itself highly coveted,” a Peter Harrington spokeswoman stated.
“In this case, the connection is particularly endearing, revealing a link crucial to the character’s development and legacy.”
Fleming went on to publish 14 novels, which have sold over 100 million copies worldwide.
