Everyone is collectively thirsting for one man with the release of the new TV series Bridgerton on Netflix: Simon, the Duke of Hastings (portrayed by British-Zimbabwean actor Regé-Jean Page).
With an unquenchable hunger for him, the internet is ablaze, and those who have not seen the series yet (what are you waiting for?) may wonder why.
Simon’s clips kissing a certain character, licking a spoon (according to The Cut) and the web circulated just now as the eight-episode series was consumed by people.
But this latest internet fascination, just like the passion of fans for this world’s Edward Cullens, is a lot. But all of this just comes down to a question: why?
[Spoiler Alert: spoilers for Bridgerton are included in this article.]]
In “Bridgerton?”, who is Simon?
A character who returns to London in 1813, Simon, the Duke of Hastings, is unwittingly caught up in the social season where young women attend balls to find men to marry. Initially, Simon is hesitant to engage, having made a promise never to marry, but he is friends with Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor), who finally becomes the exception to his law.
The two make a deal: He pretends to be interested in her to interest other men so that she can get involved, and she satisfies other people’s nagging, intrusive questions about when he’s going to get married that he’s not going to answer.
Of course, their fake dating method, like clockwork, becomes genuine – as does their love for each other.
Simon offers Daphne what she’s always desired by the end of the season, and in the end, it fills him with just as much happiness, too.
Why is it that people hunger for him?
Like several, in episode 5 pic.twitter.com/9nf7TqBhB0- Kate Bottley (@revkatebottley) January 4, 2021 The attraction for Simon comes down to a few reasons. I’m very excited, a little red in the cheek, and generally distracted by the Netflix series #BRIDGERTON I don’t think they used the right prayer book liturgy for the wedding. Of course, he’s ridiculously handsome objectively.
But beyond that, the relationship between Simon and Daphne (and hence the glimpse of his romantic side by the viewer) starts as a friendship in which Simon can demonstrate how devoted he is to her while spewing sarcastic, humorous remarks that prove he knows how to joke.
And he tells her how she can enjoy herself in private, which is definitely the hottest Netflix scene in 2020, as he explains to Daphne what sex will look like between her and a cisgender man.
Simon breaks away from Daphne when Daphne and Simon are “forced” to marry each other because they were caught kissing, and he fears she would hate the situation they were in.
He later confesses his love for her, however, and the montage of them having sex with Taylor Swift’s “Wildest Dreams” will definitely be on the minds of viewers for weeks to come.
He’s a guy who knows what he wants, has a delicate side, and isn’t unpleasant at all to look at. Of course, he is the newest boyfriend on the internet.
Simon is not without his flaws, however. Instead of explaining that he really doesn’t want them, he can’t seem to keep it together for long in the bedroom and tricks Daphne into believing he can’t have kids.
Daphne herself is deeply flawed as well.
But nothing he’s done so far with Simon seemed to curb the undeniable appetite of viewers for his character.
From here, where is Simon going?
Even though Simon’s journey seems to have ended with the finale of the first season, it is likely that he will feature in Bridgerton’s possible second season.
The book series, written by Julia Quinn, has a sequel that follows the elder brother of Anthony Bridgerton – Daphne. It is possible that his character will make at least one appearance in Bridgerton’s second season, with the commitment and love that fans have for Simon.
And if that’s the case, the hunger for Simon is sure to live on.
