On December 25, Bridgerton came out on Netflix and has since captivated viewers worldwide with its ensemble cast’s stunning talent. The role of Anthony Bridgerton, the oldest child in the family who serves as the group’s “father figure” is played by one of the main actors, Jonathan Bailey.
While there are some clear differences between Bailey and Anthony, such as Anthony obviously not working at all and enjoying the money of his family, while Bailey has been working hard for decades, the young star recently talked about a crucial difference between him and his character.
Who’s Bridgerton Anthony?
Anthony Bridgerton is the oldest brother of the Bridgerton family’s eight children.
During the 1813 social season in London, Anthony attempts to help his younger sister Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) find a husband in the first season of the Netflix series.
Anthony also pursues his own love interest, Siena Rosso, while seeking to find a match he finds worthy of his girlfriend (Sabrina Bartlett).
While Anthony has deep feelings for and won’t let go of the opera singer, the two belong to different walks of life, and so from the beginning their love is ill-starred.
Who’s Bailey Jonathan?
To many Netflix fans, Bailey may be young, but he is by no means new to the entertainment industry. His earliest acting credits date back to 1997, when Bramwell and Bright Hair appeared on television.
In 2014, Bailey also starred in the iconic British Doctor Who series.
Bailey had a promising career in theatre, starring, among others, in Les Misérables, Beautiful Thing, South Downs and Company. In 2012, he was nominated for the Evening Standard Theater Award for Outstanding Newcomer in South Downs and received three Company Awards: the 2018 BroadwayWorld UK Award for Best Supporting Actor in a New Musical Production, the 2019 WhatsOnStage Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical, and the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical Supporting Role, which he won.
Here’s how they vary.
In the February issue of Attitude magazine cover star, Bailey spoke with Sir Ian McKellen and opened up more about his personal life – namely, becoming an outed gay man.
The actor from Bridgerton said he was “not ready” to come out in 2006 while starring in the Beautiful Thing play, and has since been told not to come out to play a number of acting roles by other gay men in the industry.
“That was at a stage where I was maybe coming to terms with my own sexuality,”That was at a point where I was maybe coming to terms with my own sexuality. “I wasn’t necessarily hiding it…. But I was never not honest about it. It’s just there [and]I never felt the need to talk about it.”
Bailey then spoke about how he doesn’t think he’ll “ever know where [he]fits in, in terms of society, because it’s always changing.” It’s necessary for the actor to be “visible” as a gay person in the entertainment industry, but he also needs to keep private parts of his life – which is completely understandable.
