‘Bridgerton’: Everything We Know About (a Possible) Season 2

Even though the Netflix Regency romance show Bridgerton only came out on the streaming service on Dec. 25, the TV show has already won over audiences, therefore begging the question if the Shonda Rhimes-produced project will receive a second season.

What is ‘Bridgerton’ about?

Bridgerton is a new romance television show set in 1813 London. It’s based on a book series by Julia Quinn. The eight episodes follow primarily two families: the Bridgertons and the Featheringtons. In this time–the Regency era — girls had few ways to secure a stable future for themselves and those futures mostly consisted of arranged marriages with men they barely knew.

Bridgerton takes viewers on a journey of what elite families may have experienced during this time period. But in true Shonda fashion, it adds a diverse and feminist lens through which it is seen.

The Bridgerton family consists of four sons and four daughters, while the Featherington family has three daughters. Scandal lands in London when a secret about a newly-arrived Featherington cousin, Marina Thompson (Ruby Barker), is exposed via Lady Whistledown — an anonymous writer who divulges secrets and gossip throughout the series.

This season focuses mostly on Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and her blossoming, yet rocky, relationship with Simon Basset, the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page).

Will there be a season two?

Because the show is based on a book series that has eight novels, it’s not totally out of the question to think that the Netflix adaption would continue. Plus, this is the first show from Rhimes’ overall deal making its way onto Netflix and the mega-talented creator of Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal sure knows how to make a long-lasting hit.

Plus, what showrunner and creator of Bridgerton, Chris Van Dusen, said to Cosmopolitan UK indicates that a season two of the show is definitely something he’s interested in.

“Obviously we’re just focused on the first season right now,” Van Dusen commented. “And while that focuses on the eldest Bridgerton daughter Daphne and her love affair with Simon, we know there are eight Bridgerton siblings [and]there are eight Bridgerton books. So in success I would love to be able to explore love stories and romances for all the Bridgerton brothers and sisters, of course.”

What could happen in season two?

If the show decides to continue the series by following the books, season two could potentially focus on the eldest Bridgerton child, Anthony (Jonathan Bailey). In season one, Anthony spends much of his time trying to arrange the perfect marriage match for his sister Daphne, while balancing his secret affair with opera singer Siena Rosso (Sabrina Bartlett).

The second book follows Anthony on his own marriage journey, which of course involves even more family drama. This story takes place in 1814 which is likely where season one of Bridgerton concluded due to context clues of the final scene. We had a taste of Anthony’s love life in season one, and going forward with his journey on finding a wife makes sense for where the story could go next. Plus, the show could use the Lady Whistledown reveal (to the audience, not the fellow characters) to further that character’s development and continue their Gossip Girl-esque takedowns on those they deem fit.
