Stephen Gately, a member of Boyzone, died 12 years ago today at the age of 33. In a rediscovered conversation, his bandmates revealed how they never left his side after his death and before he was buried.
Stephen died 12 years ago today from an undiagnosed heart ailment.
In October 2009, a friend discovered the adored singer on his sofa.
Stephen’s Boyzone bandmates travelled to Spain after his death to bring his body back to the UK.
Ronan Keating, Keith Duffy, Shane Lynch, and Mikey Graham all expressed how “devastated” they were by the events.
Ronan revealed at the time that they slept next to his casket before the burial in Dublin.
Stephen’s mother had mentioned how much he disliked being alone.
He told Sky News about the night he slept next to him: “We both cried and laughed.
“We could hear him telling us jokes and responding to our jokes.”
“It was a great, incredible experience to be there with Ste that night, and also outside, because we went out around 6 a.m., and the fans had spent the night outside as well, and it was incredible…”
Ronan spoke about how fans from all over the world had gathered to honor Stephen’s life.
“People came from all around,” he continued, “people from Asia, South Africa, South America, North America, and Europe, wonderful.”
“I was ecstatic, ecstatic that he was our comrade and that he regarded us as his brothers…”
Stephen’s Boyzone bandmates released a heartfelt message at the time of his death.
This is what it said: “Stephen, our buddy and brother, has left us terribly distraught.
“We’d had so many great experiences together over the years, and we were all looking forward to many more. Stephen was a stunning individual, both physically and spiritually.
“He brightened our lives and the lives of his many friends all across the world.
“We send our heartfelt condolences to Andrew and Stephen’s families.
“‘Steo,’ we adore you and will always miss you.”
Last year, 11 years after his passing, Ronan paid tribute to Dad.
He uploaded a photo of them both when they were little on Instagram.
“This was us as I remember and always want to remember,” he wrote. “Brinkwire Summary News” has been zipping for 11 years.
