Biz Markie, the Just a Friend rapper, has died at the age of 57 due to diabetes complications.
BIZ MARKIE, the singer best known for his hit “Just A Friend,” died at the age of 57.
According to sources, Biz Markie died on Friday night in a Baltimore hospital from diabetes complications. In his last moments, his wife Tara Hall is claimed to have held his hand, with his family and nursing personnel by his side.
According to TMZ, Markie, whose real name is Marcel Theo Hall, was hospitalized in April 2020 due to type two diabetes.
Jenni Izumi, a spokesperson for the late rapper, issued a statement in response to the news of his death.
“It is with great regret that we report that hip hop pioneer Biz Markie gently passed away this evening, with his wife Tara at his side,” she wrote.
“We appreciate the many phone calls and prayers of support we’ve gotten during this trying time.
“Biz built a legacy of talent that will be long celebrated by his business peers and his adoring fans whose lives he was able to touch through music over the course of his 35-year career.”
“His colorful personality, incessant jokes, and frequent banter will be missed by his wife, many family members, and close friends,” she ended.
Following the news of his passing, tributes have poured in for the late rapper.

Kerry Washington recalled being “awestruck” when she saw the rapper perform a set.
“When I was a teenager, my friends and I used to sneak away on Monday nights to go to the hottest party in NYC,” she wrote. Soul Kitchen taught me how to live in my body while listening to music. We were awestruck whenever we saw Biz on the 1s and 2s. He was a genius in every sense of the word. @BizMarkie, may your soul rest in peace.” [sic]
Flea, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ bassist, claimed he would listen to Markie’s songs “till the day I die.”
“To the one-of-a-kind bringer of love and joy, the wonderful Biz Markie, I send all of my love. My heart will rejoice as I bang his albums until the day I die. “I adore you, Biz,” he wrote on Twitter.
