Baking soda can be used to remove rust from metal.

When rust forms on metal, it may appear to be the end of the road, but it isn’t. Here’s how to use baking soda to eliminate rust from metal.

Rust removal doesn’t have to be tough, and once you figure it out, there’s no turning back. You’ll be able to make that chef’s knife or hammer seem as good as new in no time. There are a variety of ways to remove rust, but one of the simplest is to use baking soda — here’s how.

Baking soda is best used on goods that have a mild coating of rust.

Bicarbonate works nicely on products manufactured of thinner metals as well.

Simply make a thick paste with water and baking soda and apply it to the metal.

If the rusty spots aren’t completely coated with the paste, this procedure won’t work.

Allow for an hour for the paste to soak into the object.

Scrub the metal with steel wool, a wire brush, or an extremely abrasive sponge to remove the paste.

Rinse the paste with water and let it dry completely.

Give it another shot if it didn’t turn out as well as you had hoped the first time.

To combat minor rust spots, this approach combines the acidic nature of the lemon with the abrasiveness of the salt.

Apply a layer of salt to the rusted parts, then pour lemon juice over it.

Allow for two hours of soak time before scrubbing the object with the lemon rind, or steel wool if the stains are tenacious.

Rinse well to remove the lemon, salt, and rust residue.

Vinegar is such a strong cleaning agent that it can go through almost anything.

This is the way to go if you have a lot of rust on something.

Put your rusted equipment or knives in a bowl of vinegar and leave them to soak overnight.

Remove them from the vinegar once they’ve had a good soak and scrub the rest off.

A scouring pad or steel wool is the ideal instrument for this, but it will take some elbow grease.

If any rust spots remain, repeat the method but soak the goods for a longer period of time.

Clean with dish soap and water once all rust has been removed, then thoroughly dry.
