As smoke engulfs the city, a large fire breaks out near the Paris opera house.

On Saturday, a massive fire broke out near the iconic opera house in the French capital. The cause of the fire, as well as any damage it may have caused, are unknown. According to social media accounts, a massive fire has erupted near Paris’s historic opera theater.

Images and videos shared on social media show the French capital completely engulfed in smoke.

Emergency personnel are seen at the scene of the fire on Boulevard des Capucines, near Place de l’Opéra, where Palais Garnier is located, in a video posted by French TV channel BFMTV.

The road has been closed while firefighters battle the blaze, and the public has been advised to “avoid the area and do not unduly clog emergency lines,” according to the fire department.

Two windows in a building on the boulevard are emitting black smoke, with flames visible from the street.

“Firemen are interfering, avoid the area,” the Prefecture de Police warned in a message on Twitter.

The cause of the incident is yet unknown, and no injuries have been reported.
