Andrew Lloyd Webber’s theatres, including the Palladium, may have to be sold.
Andrew Lloyd Webber has warned that he may be forced to sell his venues, including the London Palladium, if the government does not intervene quickly. After the opening of his West End musical Cinderella was canceled owing to government isolation laws, the entire cast was forced to isolate when just one of the company contracted Covid.
“One needs to realize… there isn’t much more gas in the tank frankly,” Lord Lloyd-Webber stated as he reopened the Theatre Royal Drury Lane after a £60 million restoration.
The Cambridge Theatre, Adelphi Theatre (co-owned with the Nederlander Group), Gillian Lynne Theatre, Her Majesty’s Theatre, Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the London Palladium, and the Other Palace are among his seven West End theatres.
The Daily Express has been urging the government to fund the arts throughout the Covid crisis through its Raise the Curtain campaign.
However, Lord Lloyd-Webber warned that theatreland was still in the midst of a grave crisis.
“If we find this [the epidemic]continues and there is no government help at all, I believe the business sector will see people fall under,” he warned.
“We’ve all kept going as long as we can, paying our employees, but we won’t be able to continue.”
The impresario explained that he wanted to strike a balance between his function as a theater owner and his role as a composer.
He predicted that the situation would worsen, forcing him to sell his theaters.
“I have to balance the fact that I have the theatres, since it is my way of thanking a profession that has been very wonderful to me, but in the end, I am a composer,” he remarked.
“I am now 73 years old, and I need to be somewhere where I can hear music performed.
Because that is what I do, I need to write another show.
“And these shows enable me to do things like what I’ve done here [at Theatre Royal Drury Lane].”
“If we can’t afford to do it, we have to make a decision, and my conclusion has to be that I am fundamentally a composer,” he said. While it’s fantastic to be able to accomplish something like this, to have theaters and run them the way I do, I won’t be able to attend.”Brinkwire Summary News”.
