Chevy Chase may be an icon among comedians, but his reputation has been marred by a series of scandals in recent years.

Chase, who rose to fame on the Saturday Night Live sketch comedy show, is also the star of many famous movies and saw his career take off in 2009 when he took on the lead role in the Community classic cult series. However, a variety of stories have surfaced over the years, considering Chase’s success with movie viewers, alleging that Chase is not only difficult to work with, but also outright mean and condescending.

Why was Chevy Chase made famous?

In 1943, Chase was born in Maryland. He grew up in an affluent family and attended several of the East Coast’s finest schools.

Chase was fond of music as well as the performing arts and co-founded the Channel One comedy troupe in 1967.

Chase performed sketch comedy and stand-up routines in the late sixties and early seventies, ultimately crossing paths with other icons of comedy, such as John Belushi and Gilda Radner.

In 1975, Chevy Chase became one of the founding cast members of Saturday Night Live, the rebooted sketch comedy series.

For his detailed impersonations and impeccable physical comedy routines, Chase quickly became famous and developed a reputation.

When he took over hosting the “Weekend Update” section of the program, his success grew even further.

To pursue a film career, Chase chose to leave the show at the height of his fame. In films such as “National Lampoon’s Vacation” and “Fletch,” he starred, cementing his reputation as one of the most famous actors of the late 70s and early 80s.

Rumors that Chase was extremely difficult to work with had been circulating for years, rumors that were cemented by comments made by SNL writers and actors.

Bill Murray had a tense relationship with Chase, also made famous by the comedy series, with some sources suggesting that Murray and Chase also got into physical altercations.

When Chase took his position on Community in 2009, rumors emerged alleging that some of his co-stars – including up-and-coming young actor Donald Glover – had been disrespectful of the comedy veteran.

“Chevy was the first to realize how immensely talented Donald was, and the way he expressed his jealousy was an attempt to scare Donald away.” as series creator Dan Harmon later revealed.

Jane Curtin, who worked as an SNL comedian and writer in the 1970s, recalled that Curtin was the one who did “Weekend Update.” when Chase returned to host the program. Chase believed that he should be the one to host the segment.
