After next Monday, July 19, SAINSBURY’S has joined bookseller Waterstones in urging customers to remain wearing masks. In England, the requirement to conceal one’s face in public settings will be eliminated as of this day.
Sainsbury’s has followed Waterstones’ lead and announced that visitors entering its stores next week would be required to wear a face mask. For their own protection, the supermarket encourages customers and employees to continue wearing masks.
In England, the legal necessity to wear a mask in an enclosed environment will disappear on Monday, July 19.
Entering stores without a mask will no longer be prohibited.
However, the government stated that starting Monday, English consumers should “expect and recommend” wearing a facial covering.
In both Scotland and Wales, wearing a face mask will remain a legal requirement for supermarket consumers.
Some retailers in England, on the other hand, have indicated that they will continue to encourage customers to do what they have been doing for the past year.
Although it will be a personal choice whether or not to wear a mask starting next week, Sainsbury’s stated there will be signage and tannoy messages reminding consumers to do so.
Customers will be asked to continue to wear a face covering if they can, and workers will be encouraged to do so unless they are behind a screen, according to the posters and messages.
“While wearing a face covering will become a personal choice, the decision to ask everyone in stores to continue to wear a face covering if they can reflects feedback from customers and staff who wish to retain the policy in place,” the supermarket said.
Some plastic screens will be gradually removed from Sainsbury’s stores in England, but those separating customers from staff at the checkouts will stay.
Hand sanitizer stations will continue to be available in stores, and supermarket personnel will clean trollies and baskets overnight.
“As we respond to the recent change in government policy, we know that safety is still front of mind for many of our staff and customers,” said Simon Roberts, Sainsbury’s Chief Executive.
