WATCH: Roy Keane rips into Ian Wright as tempers fray in the ITV studio after England’s World Cup exit – Ireland

Roy Keane and Ian Wright were involved in one of the more comical moments of the World Cup as they clashed on the ITV pundit panel earlier in the tournament and the outspoken duo kick-started their battle with a feisty exchange of views following England’s World Cup exit.

Republic of Ireland assistant boss made it clear that he was not impressed with former England striker Wright as he was ‘getting carried away’ with the prospect of Gareth Southgate’s side going all the way to the World Cup final, when they were still playing in the group stages of the competition.

That caution proved to well founded as Mario Mandzukic’s extra-time winner fired Croatia into Sunday’s final against France as England’s expense in a tense semi-final in Moscow, with Keane biding his time before revisiting his previous discussion with Wright.

A fired up Keane started the debate as he suggested many England fans had lost track of reality as they got carried away with the excitement of their World Cup run, with Wright eager to snap back at the Irishman in typically jovial fashion.

“Before the game, the whole talk was about the final, the final,” began Keane, directing his comments at Wright. “Everyone was talking about the final, football’s coming home.

“I don’t mind you being happy, but you were planning the final, where the parades were. You need a reality check man. Get excited when they get to the final man!

“You are a grown man, you have played the game. You know how hard it is to get to these big finals or even get to these World Cup. You know what I’m talking about, relax yourself.”

Keane may not have been impressed by Wright’s attempts to mimic his Irish accent as voices were raised in the ITV studio, but the discussion appeared to end on a good note, with fellow panelists Gary Neville and Lee Dixon doing their best not to laugh as the duo went toe-to-toe.

It was pretty clear that Keane had been waiting for his moment to bite back at Wright after his early tournament confidence had become more than a little tiresome and when he picked his moment, he went with all guns blazing.
