Vodafone 5G is Coming to 19 UK Locations This Yr

Vodafone says it’ll be bringing 5G to 19 cities and towns across the UK this year, adding to its already live sites in parts of Manchester, Bristol, Cardiff and Liverpool.

The network will soon be adding London, Glasgow and Birmingham to the list, and then it’s time for some of the places that aren’t always included in new and shiny things like this. Specifically, 5G will be coming to:

While the new sites will use optical fibre that’s capable of speeds up to 10 Gbps, you probably won’t actually get that speed (your phone might melt if you did). Vodafone says at first, speeds will be about ten times faster than 4G, which still means over 1 Gbps. Hardly anyone’s got gigabit broadband in their houses, never mind on their phones, so this is a pretty big deal.

Scott Petty, chief technology officer at Vodafone UK, comments:

“5G will usher in a new era where everyone and everything is better connected, whether you are running a hotel in Portsmouth or broadcasting live at MediaCity in Salford.”

What he doesn’t mention is that this means Instagram types will be livestreaming everything, everywhere, all the time. But at least we can probably get rid of the CCTV network in that case, because Big Brother will be all of us. [Pocket Lint]
