A 6.3 magnitude earthquake has struck off the northeast coast of the South Pacific island nation of Tonga, the US Geological Survey says.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The quake struck 185km east northeast of the capital, Nuku’alofa, at a depth of 80.5 km.

Tonga, a Polynesian archipelago comprising 169 islands, is regularly hit by quakes, part of the geologically active Pacific Ring of Fire.
