Spaghetti Bolognese ‘is totally made-up’ rants indignant mayor

THE CLASSIC Italian recipe is is nothing of the kind, says the mayor of the city it’s supposed to come from.

Spaghetti Bolognese is one of the main go-to recipes for busy parents across the country.

Bit of spaghetti. Mince. Jar of sauce. Job done.

Or you can get all fancy with finely-chopped celery, garlic and fresh herbs. Either way it’s an all-time classic. A timeless ‘Dad’s cooking tonight’ standby.

Bit of bad news though: it doesn’t exist.

Spaghetti Bolognese is named. as you might have guessed, after the northern Italian city of Bologna. And Virginio Merola, the mayor of Bologna, has announced the dish never actually existed. He branded the dish ‘Fake News.’

“It’s strange to be famous all over the world for a dish that isn’t ours.”

Virginio Merola, mayor of Bologna

Sr. Merola told Italian broadcaster, RAI: “Spaghetti bolognese doesn’t actually exist, yet it’s famous the world over.

“We’d prefer the world to know that Bologna invented tagliatelle, tortellini and lasagne.”

He posted a request on Twitter for Spag Bol enthusiasts to send in photos of the ‘imaginary’ dish. It read: “Dear Citizens –  I’m collecting photos of Spaghetti Bolognese around the world, about fake news. This comes from London. If you can send me yours, thanks!

Sr. Merola  told the Telegraph: “It’s strange to be famous all over the world for a dish that isn’t ours.

“Of course we are happy that it draws attention to our city, but we would prefer to be known for the quality food that is part of our culinary tradition.”

Bologna is renowned for its rich culinary heritage. The closest native equivalent to Spag Bol is a meat-based pasta sauce that in Italy is called ragù – but that’s generally serviced with ribbon-like strips of tagliatelle.

Serving the sauce with spaghetti is decidedly not Italian.

The region is also known for its sausages, its sparkling wine – Lambrusco – and delicious pastries such as fave dei morti (“biscuits of the dead”).

With its pleasant climate and lively nightlife it’s a place very much worth visiting. Just don’t order Spag Bol.
