NINTENDO has hinted that maybe the remake of Link’s Awakening won’t be the only Zelda game we see come to the hybrid home/handheld console this year.
In 2019’s only Nintendo Direct so far, the hardware and software giant announced that it would be bringing The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening to Switch later this year.
The 90s game – which many hold as their favourite Legend of Zelda title – initially launched on the GameBoy Color, so this new update is a pretty massive change compared to what players are used to.
However, Zelda fans strap yourselves in, because there’s another wild rumour flying about that suggests – maybe – another game from the series could be coming to Switch this year, too.
A renowned leaker by the name of Vergeben uploaded a post on Game FAQs that suggests yet another 2D Zelda game would be released for the digital eShop this year. Other than that, not a lot of information was announced.
According to Vergeben, the game is a “smaller” 2D eShop title that will supposedly be announced and released before we see the Zelda remake.
We picked up this story via Nintendo Life, but as the site notes Vergeben has a patchy record when it comes to leaks. For what it’s worth, Vergeben did correctly predict several roster additions for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – Ridley, Ice Climbers, Ken, Incineroar and Simon Belmont were all correctly hinted at by the forum user.
However, Vergeben also said Star Fox: Grand Prix would make an appearance during last month’s Direct presentation – that never came to fruition.
This leak could have some weight to it, though – there are already a few 2D Zelda games on the store which you can play if you have access to Switch Online.
The Legend of Zelda and The Adventure of Link are both playable. So what could come next?
Well, we already saw The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past appear on the 3DS Virtual Console (as well as cropping up on the Wii and Wii U store). So it’s likely we could see this added to the Switch roster.
The game also appeared in a leaked list of datamined titles that appear in the Switch Online’s code – but aren’t yet available.
