The Red Devils took a while to get into their stride in Switzerland, and occasionally looked vulnerable early on when Kevin Mbabu had some joy for the hosts attacking down the right flank.

But eventually it was Paul Pogba who stepped up, smashing home a brilliant goal with his left foot into the top corner on 35 minutes.

Just before half time the Frenchman scored again, after Mbabu was deemed to have handled a cross from Luke Shaw.

Pogba smashed the penalty into the top right corner with aplomb, and put any thoughts of a shock win for the Swiss champions to bed.

The World Cup-winning midfielder turned creator for United’s third, when he played in Anthony Martial, whose shot was deflected past goalkeeper David Von Ballmoos.

The rest of the game played out easily enough for Jose Mourinho’s men, and he even managed to give a run out to young midfielder Andreas Pereira.

Next up for United is a home game with Wolves on Saturday afternoon, and their next Champions League clash is at home to Valencia on October 2.
