MANCHESTER UNITED’s run of form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer means it is now “ridiculous” he hasn’t yet been offered the job on a full-time basis.
That is the view of former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson, who insists it is about time the club put their faith in the Norwegian long term.
The Red Devils have embarked on an astonishing run of results since Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho in mid-December, winning 14 of 17 games in all competitions.
Wins away at Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, and a remarkable victory away at Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday night has led to fans demanding their former striker remain at the club.
United travel to Arsenal once again on Sunday, this time in the Premier League after already beating them 3-1 in the FA Cup, knowing victory will put them level on points with Tottenham in third place in the table.
Ahead of the Emirates clash, Lawrenson has given his score prediction while stating his case that Solskjaer should be offered the job sooner rather than later.
“United’s run under Solskjaer means it is now becoming ridiculous that they have not given him the job permanently. What are they waiting for?” he said.
“Imagine if there was a suggestion that they were looking around at other managers? The crowd at Old Trafford would go wild, and the club would look stupid.
“Solskjaer has to get the job because, if he can achieve this with what he has got now, imagine what he could do when he gets a chance to improve the team.
“What are they waiting for?”
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
“He has already improved the players he has got, which is the biggest thing that has impressed me so far, on top of his results.”
And Lawrenson has predicted that the game with the Gunners will finish 1-1.
Solskjaer will be relieved to welcome back some of his first-team regulars after being without 10 players for the win at PSG.
Anthony Martial is available after a groin injury while Eric Bailly has recovered from a heavy challenge in that game, while Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera could be fit.
Paul Pogba is available after serving a European suspension.
Ahead of the game, Solskjaer said: “I love managing these boys, I love working here.
“As I said so many times, I am just doing the best I can every single day, and if and when… if it comes to a decision to be made, we’ve got to think about that.
“I am not here to get excited, I am here to do my job. I am contracted to Man United until the end of June.”
