M5 closed after horror pile-up – heavy traffic builds as all lanes blocked

HEAVY traffic is building on the M5 this morning after a horror multi-vehicle pile-up has blocked all northbound lanes near Avonmouth.

Rush hour traffic has ground to a halt following the crash and the motorway is expected to be closed “for some time”.

One eyewitness, who was driving passed the collision on the southbound side, said he saw a passenger being cut free from a lorry by firefighters.

He added he saw at least three fire engines and three ambulances at the scene of the crash and that motorists were being diverted onto the M49.

Congestion has built up to J19 Portishead on the northbound side due to the collision, according to traffic monitoring service Inrix.

Traffic is queuing on the M4 Eastbound between Junction 22 M49 and Junction 20 (where it connects with the M5 J15).

Congestion is reported back to the Prince of Wales bridge.

Delays are expected as traffic diverts around the closure of the the M5.

A police spokesman confirmed the crash involved four vehicles.

They said: “We were called at 7.18am by ambulance to a four vehicle collision, one of the vehicles is a lorry.

“There are people injured. The M5 is currently closed northbound between 18 and 17.”

Highways England said: “The M5 in Gloucestershire is closed northbound between J18A (M49) and J17 (Bristol Filton Airport) due to a collision involving HGV’s.

“Road users are advised to exit the M5 at J18A onto the M49 to join the M4 and then re-join the M5.

“Emergency services are at scene.

“Road users are advised to consider alternative routes at this time and allow additional time for their journey.”
