Iran warns ‘we are on the cusp of a full scale confrontation’ with US

IRAN is on the “cusp of a full scale confrontation with the enemy” a top commander has claimed amid rising tensions with the US.

Iran and the US have been at loggerheads after Washington claimed there was a “credible threat” from Tehran to their forces in the Middle East.

Major General Hossein Salami, the leader of Iran’s powerful Revolutionary Guard (IRGC), made the warning as tensions reach fever pitch.

Quoted by the Fars news agency, he said: “We are on the cusp of a full-scale confrontation with the enemy.

This moment in history, because the enemy has stepped into the field of confrontation with us with all the possible capacity, is the most decisive moment of the Islamic revolution.”

It comes as US forces moved into the Middle East with the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and a group of four B-52 Bombers.

And amid all the war talk, US President Donald Trump has tweeted he is confident Iran “will want to talk soon”.

“We are on the cusp of a full-scale confrontation with the enemy.”

And also Iran’s defence minister Amir Hatami stoked war tensions as he promised the country would defeat both the US and Isreal.

He said: “Iran has the highest level of defense-military preparedness to confront any type of threat and excessive demands.”

Unammed senior Iranian officials added Tehran was ready for all scenarios from “confrontation to diplomacy”.

They added the US “could not afford” another war in the Middle East.

US officials today pulled out “non-emergency” staff from Iraq today as tensions continue to mount in the Middle East.

Staff at the embassy in Baghdad and the consulate in Irbil were ordered to leave as soon as possible.

Pentagon chiefs said the threat level in the Middle East had increased due to intelligence about “Iran-backed forces”.

And this contradicted British general Chris Ghika who said there was “no increased threat” in the region.

Disputed reports emerged yesterday that the US are dusting off Iraq War-era war plans for the Middle East and drawing up plans to send in 120,000 soldiers.

It was alleged acting defence boss Patrick Shanahan presented the updated version of the plan to the White House.

War hawks close to Trump – including top advisor John Bolton – had reportedly ordered the changes to the plan amid a real fear of war with Iran.

Trump however lashed out at the report when confronted by the media – but did say he would send troops if he deemed it necessary.

When asked about the report on the White House lawn, Trump said: “I think its fake news.

“Would I do that? Absolutely. But we have not planned for that.

“And hopefully we are not gonna have to plan for that.

“And if we did that, we’d send a hell of a lot more troops than that.”

Unnamed sources have cited “multiple, credible threats” in the media amid the build-up of US steel in the Middle East.

Donald Trump’s regime has openly clashed with Iran since he took the White House.

The two sides have exchanged various fiery jabs including Trump warning in all capitals on Twitter: “You will suffer consequences the likes of which few through history have suffered.”

Trump’s top diplomat Mike Pompeo confirmed the current military build-up is a response to intelligence about Iranian attack.
