I-17 reopens in Phoenix after closure for police situation

Interstate 17 at Camelback Road has reopened after a police situation caused a closure on Thursday evening, officials said.

The Arizona Department of Transportation confirmed that all lanes of the freeway reopened as of 7:25 p.m.

The freeway initially was shut in both directions just before 6 p.m. as officials assisted a woman “in mental crisis,” according to Phoenix police.

Southbound lanes reopened as of 6:55 p.m.

Freeway cameras showed traffic snarled in the area as the shutdown occurred during the Thursday evening rush hour.

The Phoenix Fire Department also had been dispatched to the scene.
