How social media reacted to England’s semi-final defeat – Ireland

England saw their World Cup journey come to a dramatic end after falling to an extra-time semi-final defeat to Croatia.

Kieran Trippier gave Gareth Southgate’s side an early lead with a great free-kick in the fifth minute, but Croatia grew into the game with Ivan Perisic levelling to extend the match.

However, Mario Mandzukic was the hero when the striker slotted home in the 109th minute to send Zlatko Dalic’s team to their first World Cup final on Sunday.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at how social media reacted to the result in Moscow.

I know how disappointed @england must feel right now but I couldn’t be more proud of this team and you should hold your heads high. You’ve had an incredible #WorldCup, made history, and gave us fans something to believe in. We know there is more to come from this @england team. W

If anyone has anything negative to say about this @England team or individuals keep your tweets to yourself. Nobody would have thoughts they’d be where they are or achieved what they have and they’ve made everyone proud so get behind them and show love not hate #threelions ❤️

Thanks to the England team, and manager, for giving us this beautiful World Cup run. It’s been a ride.

HRVATSKAAAAAAA ZAUVIJEK AJMOOO NEKA GORIII SVE ❤️❤️❤️

Utterly choked, but this young side gave absolutely everything. It’s a huge step forward and they’ll only get better in the future. They can hold their heads high, they did our country proud. Congratulations to Croatia.

‪Gutted. Massive well done to Gareth and all the lads who have done us all proud, keep your heads held high. This is a great young team with a big big future 👏👏👏 ‬

I’m so proud of our Boys & to be honest, the whole country. I’ve been inspired by the spirit of our people all coming together during this time. It’s what makes me so proud to be British. Let’s hold on to that fighting spirit & stand tall & United. It will come home one day! 🙌🏾

Happiness in the journey! We can’t only be happy if we win. Proud of this team. Proud of our country. That was beautiful ✌🏾❤️🦁🦁🦁

Gutted doesn’t even cover it! It has been a privilege watching this #ENG team. Must credit #CRO finishing top of #ARg group, win 2 penalty shootouts, comeback from 1-0 down tonight. Top top team. Well done #ENG for all the pride you’ve given the nation👏

Great effort from @England had the chances in the first half but have made the country proud kept going to the end @GarethSouthgate top class

The England squad have given the whole country a buzz for 3 weeks, but Croatia getting to the final with a population of 4 million is extraordinary. #ENGCRO #WorldCup

Committed, brave , passionate, energetic, they gave their all . Be proud of them , they were amazing!!! @England 👏👏👏

Proud of the England team. Exceeded everyone’s expectations incl mine and this young team will benefit in years to come 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻congrats Croatia on reaching your 1st final, great mental strength shown after 3 extra time games 👍🏻

Absolutely Gutted.. chances like that don’t come to often.. needed to take advantage when on top in first half. Second half they grew stronger. We looked leggy and it killed us…… but… so proud of those lads. Semi final was more than we even hoped for. #ThreeLions #ENGvCRO

Hasn’t rained in weeks! England go out the World Cup and it starts raining! 😩 when it rains it pours in this country.. the squad is young and the future looks bright! The lads done themselves proud and will go again. 🦁🦁🦁

Proud of the lads. Gave us great entertainment all summer. They come back with a lot more respect than they went.

Will we ever get a better chance?

😢🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Or course we dared to dream. That’s what they made us do. GS and his team dared us to dream with them. Sometimes dreams have happy ending. Sometimes they end up with a cold sweat. Either way the journey is all part of it. Rather travel than stand still. Thanks lads

May not be popular for saying this but after exceeding expectation this WC,I hope the mentality of many #ENG fans/media in 2020 Euros is about winning, whoever the opponent. Too much focus on avoiding big nations in this WC. #ENG a huge footballing nation now need to think like 1

Very cheerful at the Croatian car wash this morning ….

When we arrived in Repino a month ago, this was on my bed. I’ve looked at it every day since – and it was the first thing I looked at when we got back this morning.

I am so proud to work for this team and this manager. pic.twitter.com/e8ZhVxCEez
