BRATISLAVA, March 10 (Xinhua) — Detva have a chance to be the dark horses of Slovakia’s top ice hockey league Tipsport Liga after they beat defending champions Banska Bystrica 4-2 in game two of the playoff quarterfinal series on Sunday.
Ladislav Scurko scored the opener for Detva in the ninth minute. Banska Bystrica answered by a Patrik Lamper’s goal in the 16th minute. The fans saw only one goal in the second period as Scurko fired again. With the third goal by Radovan Pulis in the 47th minute and the fourth goal by Zdenek Kral in the 59th minute, Detva successfully tied the quarterfinal series at 1-1.
Zvolen, the runners-up after regular season, survived a very tough game two against MAC Budapest and booked their second victory 3-2 after the final shootout. The hero of their win was Hungarian goalkeeper Bence Balizs, who made nearly 60 saves.
Budapest went ahead twice thanks to goals from Bodo. Zvolen equalized by goals from Mitchell and Vandane in the first and second period, respectively. The third period and the overtime period finished scoreless. After the final shootout, Zvolen walked off as the winners with the decisive goal scored by Kytnar.
The game three of the two quarterfinals will be played on Thursday. Game one of the other two quarterfinals, which will see Nitra versus Trencin and Kosice versus Poprad, will begin on Tuesday.
