A couple thought to be missing in the Western Australia desert have contacted police and advised they are safe and well.

A search had been launched for the young couple who were feared missing when their car broke down in the Pilbara outback.

Police said the pair hadn’t been heard from for five days – and it’s believed their car had broken down on a remote dirt road.

The couple, aged in their 20s, were believed to be stranded somewhere near the town of Port Hedland.

They were travelling in a silver 80s series Toyota Landcruiser and towing a green box trailer.

The couple were driving across the remote Gibson Desert in WA.

They had called a mechanic in the Pilbara town on Saturday – but hadn’t been heard from since.

Other travellers reported they were driving from the Kunawarritji Community in the Gibson Desert to Port Hedland, possibly along the Canning Stock Route.

The couple made contact with police earlier this afternoon.
