A COUPLE have been arrested after their public marriage proposal went viral.
More than 3million people have seen the heartwarming moment in Tehran, Iran, after it was posted to Twitter last week.
The clip shows the man putting a ring on his partner’s finger before confetti erupts in celebration.
Visibly surprised, the woman then hugs him and cheers erupt from the crowd.
But it wasn’t a happy ending as the pair were arrested by police soon after.
Arak’s deputy police chief, Mostafa Norouzi, told the Shahrvand Daily that it is unacceptable for the young “to do whatever is common in other places of the world and disregard mores, culture and religion” in Iran.
Norouzi added that the pair’s “offence is very clear”.
Police have since said the couple have been released on bail.
Mixing between the genders and displays of public affection are severely restricted under Iran’s Islamic laws.
Journalist Sobhan Hassanvand uploaded the video, adding that the pair were arrested for the marriage proposal “based on decadent Western culture”.
More than 3million people have seen the video since it was posted.
“Crazy, an act that is normal in almost the whole world but not normal in Iran,” one wrote.
Another commented: “How can you be arrested for that.”
And a third added: “Poor guys, instead of celebrating they have to bail themselves out while crying.”
