Chelsea news: Claude Makelele makes bold Maurizio Sarri prediction

CHELSEA manager Maurizio Sarri can ‘make history’ at the club with the players he has at his disposal.

That’s according to former Blues midfielder Claude Makelele, who says that he is confident the former Napoli manager will be a success.

Sarri replaced Antonio Conte in the summer after a long drawn out saga over whether he would remain at Stamford Bridge or not.

Conte won the Premier League title and FA Cup in his two years in charge but it was clear that he was looking for a way out.

Sarri, 59, has since overseen a perfect start to his tenure with the Blues, winning all four Premier League matches so far.

“So it’s going to be difficult for them to win the Premier League. I’m confident”

Chelsea have defeated Huddersfield, Arsenal, Newcastle and Bournemouth, and are one of only three teams to boast a 100 per cent record.

Maybe the most pleasing aspect of his short reign though is hanging on to star man Eden Hazard after constant speculation over a move to Real Madrid.

Indeed, the new boss was able to keep hold of all of his key players in the summer, apart from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

The Belgium international was though swiftly replaced by Kepa, who signed for a world-record £71.6m fee for a goalkeeper from Athletic Bilbao.

While dethroning champions Manchester City might be a tough ask, Makelele – a two-time Premier League winner with the Blues – is expecting big things from Sarri.

“I think Chelsea changed a lot,” he said. “Before now you have a lot of teams in the Premier League, it’s competitive.

“Manchester City, Manchester United, and also the smaller teams have good players.

“So it’s going to be difficult for them to win the Premier League. I’m confident.

“He [Sarri] still has good players, [Eden] Hazard is there, [N’Golo] Kante is there.

“These kinds of players give a different story about Chelsea than the way we knew Chelsea before.

“I think he has the capacity to make history for Chelsea again.”

Chelsea welcome Cardiff to Stamford Bridge when the Premier League resumes following the international break.

While it could be argued that they are yet to be properly tested so far this season, they can only beat what is put in front of them.

And with no Champions League football to contend with this season, Sarri can possibly put all of his eggs into the Premier League basket.
