Chelsea news: Alessio Romagnoli transfer prediction made by ESPN pundit

CHELSEA will have their work cut out to if they want to sign AC Milan star Alessio Romagnoli.

That’s the verdict of former Blues midfielder turned ESPN pundit Craig Burley.

New Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has inherited a backline of ageing stars as well as inexperienced ones.

David Luiz and Gary Cahill are past their prime while Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger are still learning their trade.

So the former Napoli boss has his heart set on raiding Serie A for the most highly-rated central defenders.

One of those is Milan ace Romagnoli, but Burley thinks the chances of a January deal are minimal.

The 23-year-old only renewed his contract with the Rossoneri in June, extending it until 2022.

And while Burley can see Sarri shipping out a centre-back or two in the transfer window he cannot see Romagnoli leaving.

“I can see Sarri trying to clear that backline out,” Burley told ESPN.

Chelsea news: Alessio Romagnoli is wanted by Maurizio Sarri

“It’s about keeping the best players for AC Milan, not selling”

“I’m going to put miss, because are we talking about January or are we talking about the end of the year?

“It’s up to AC Milan. They’ve got new owners, they’re trying to build something, they’re obviously really trying to push for the top four this year.

“There’s going to be a little bit of time before they’re fighting for the Scudetto.

“But they’ve made some good signings, they’ve got a top striker up front.

“They’ve had a half-decent start to the season and it’s about keeping the best players for AC Milan, not selling.”

Italy international Romagnoli has become a key man at the San Siro recently.

He made 28 Serie A appearances, primarily alongside Leonardo Bonucci for Gennaro Gattuso’s men last season.

Chelsea return to domestic duty against Premier League new boys Cardiff on Saturday (3pm).
