A manhunt has been launched in California for a suspect accused of attacking his wife with a chainsaw in front of their children.
Whittier Police were called to a house in the Milton Avenue area of the city regarding an attempted murder, which stemmed from a domestic violence incident.
When officers arrived, they found a woman suffering “traumatic physical injuries” believed to have been inflicted by a chainsaw.
The victim, named locally as Gloria Mojica, was taken to a nearby trauma center. Police said her current condition is unknown.
Officers later identified the suspect and the victim’s husband, 32-year-old Alejandro Alvarez. After allegedly attacking his wife, Alvarez drove away from the scene in his SUV.
He later crashed the car before stealing another vehicle in nearby Mayberry Park and continuing to flee.
“Though the chainsaw has been recovered, Alvarez is to be considered armed and dangerous,” a Whittier Police spokesperson said. “If you know of his whereabouts, do not approach and call 911.”
Stunned neighbors described their shock after witnessing the aftermath of the alleged attack, which is reported to have left at least two of the couple’s young children covered in blood.
“I heard people screaming,” Enrique Avila told KTLA. “A lady said, ‘Leave me alone or I’m gonna call the cops.’ And then after that, I heard little kids inside the house.”
“They just kept screaming and then I heard what sounded like a chainsaw. I was like ‘what’s going on?’” Darian Pickle told KABC.
“He looked like he was showered in blood,” Raquel Sanchez added.
Fernando Jauregui said he had never heard the couple argue before, with the family reported to be well known in the community and would socialize regularly.
“Everything is OK,” he told KTLA. “I don’t know what happened.”
Alvarez is described as a male Hispanic, 5’3″, 130lbs with black hair and brown eyes.
He was last seen wearing a brown “Hurley” T-shirt and dark jeans. He is believed to be driving a stolen 2004 Mercury Mountaineer, SUV, 4-door, blue/tan in color with California license plate number 8ABD233.
The couple’s three elementary school-aged children are reported to have been taken into protective custody in the wake of the attack.
