A BUS has exploded by a tunnel in the centre of Stockholm with black plumes of smoke over the city.
The driver has been taken to hospital with serious injuries it has been reported.
There were initial fears of a terrorist attack but it appears as though the bus hit the roof of the tunnel leading to the explosion.
Stockholm Fire Department’s operational manager Tony Frank said: “A bus has exploded, we are at the scene..
A police spokeswoman said: “The driver has been taken to hospital.
“There were no passengers on the bus.”
The fire has taken place at the Klaratunneln with the bus going up in flames having hit signs hanging down from the tunnel warning of the height.
An emergency services spokeswoman said: “The bus hit a sign hanging down that shows the height limit and then the gas tank on the roof has exploded.
Firefighters were still battling the blaze 40 minutes later.
A witness, Bjorn Wallentin, said: “I heard a big bang first and then several smaller ones. It seemed
like scaffolding collapsed or a terorrist attack.”
