BBC Proms 2018 – Week Seven

This week the BBC Proms continues to mark 100 years since the birth of Leonard Bernstein.

Marin Alsop conducts the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra with pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet in Bernstein’s Symphony No 2, The Age of Anxiety.

The inspiration for this work came from WH Auden’s poem of the same name, which Bernstein regarded as “one of the most shattering examples of pure virtuosity in the history of English poetry.”

Tuesday afternoon, during Upbeat with David Morriss, dance to the Gypsy rhythms of Hungarian folk music in a concert from the Budapest Festival orchestra conducted by Iván Fischer. The orchestra will be joined on stage by a trio of the country’s folk musicians for works by Liszt, Brahms and Sarasate.

American mezzo-soprano Susan Graham is due to visit New Zealand next year to perform with the NZSO. On Tuesday night in Music Alive she takes the stage with the Boston Symphony conducted by Andris Nelsons and a performance of Mahler’s ‘sunniest and most joyful’ Symphony No 3.
