ARSENAL boss Unai Emery could leave the club at the end of next season – and Paul Merson has revealed why.
Arsenal are looking at a surprise exit from the Europa League after suffering a shock 3-1 defeat at the hands of Rennes in France.
Despite Alex Iwobi’s opener in the third minute, it all went downhill from there after Sokratis Papastathopoulos was sent off in the first half following two yellow cards.
The French outfit went on to score three times – Benjamin Bourigeaud, a Nacho Monreal own goal and Ismaila Sarr’s late header compounding a night of misery for the travelling fans.
The Europa League may pose Arsenal’s best chance of Champions League football next season, with the battle for fourth heating up with Manchester United and Chelsea.
There has been undoubted progress under Emery, with the Gunners 12 points better off now than at this moment in the season.
Yet not all fans are convinced, but former Arsenal star Merson believes the Spaniard needs two transfer windows to get the team he wants.
And if he is not granted the transfer funds necessary then he could be off very soon.
“I like him, but he has to sort out the defence,” Merson said on talkSPORT.
“If he gets that sorted in this window or in the next two windows, then he’ll be judged.
“Arsene Wenger always used to say one thing, and a lot of managers, you’re only as good as your players, it doesn’t matter who you are.
“You don’t think Pep Guardiola’s going down to do the job Sol Campbell’s doing and he’s going to play the Man City way down there.
“You’re only as good as your players.
“So for me I think he needs two windows and then he’ll be judged.
“Then after that I think he’ll either move on and think ‘this weren’t what it said on the tin’.”
