An escaped prisoner was pepper-sprayed, tasered and then recaptured after hiding under a house in South Auckland, police say.
Armed police and the Armed Offenders Squad were called to Manurewa at 2pm this afternoon after reports of a man carrying a pistol.
Police had pulled over a car for a traffic stop at a 12.15 when a man fled from the vehicle.
Detective senior sergeant Lloyd Schmid said an officer chased the man on foot and cornered him, then used pepper-spray and a taser. But the man presented a pistol and the officer retreated.
The man was found hiding under a house and arrested, he said.
The 48-year-old is due to appear in court tomorrow charged with escaping custody, and presenting a firearm.
Earlier today, police urged the public to keep clear of the area and asked motorists to use alternate routes.
