ADAM Johnson’s ex girlfriend says she was “paranoid” about sex offenders leering at her baby as she visited the footie nonce in jail.
Stacey Flounders, 29, said she made the “horrible” decision to take her child, Ayla, to see Johnson behind bars after his conviction for sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.
The 31-year-old ex-England winger is expected to be released within weeks after being jailed for six years in March 2016.
Stacey, 29, regularly took Ayla to see the former Sunderland star during his first year in jail at HMP Moorland near Doncaster.
She said she believed Johnson’s initial denials but has come to view him as “an arrogant man who had lied and lied”.
The mum said she is dreading the day she has to tell their daughter, now four, “what kind of man her father really is”.
“I could never have imagined bringing a baby into this world and taking her to see her daddy in jail,” she told the Sun on Sunday.
“It was a massive decision to make, horrible. But Ayla needed to see him and asked for him. I didn’t want her to forget him.”
She claims Johnson tried to cajole her into staying with him by promising her marriage and “the family you always wanted”.
Feeling sympathy for the man she loved, she visited him in jail with Ayla but now realises he was trying to manipulate her.
“I felt paranoid”
Flounders, who first met Johnson in 2011 at a pub gathering, said she made the visits for the sake of their baby.
Stacey added: “Ayla was just over a year old and had to go through a metal detector.
“I had to hold her while a guard patted her down. We sat in a room full of sex offenders and I felt paranoid, like they were looking at Ayla.”
“There was one guard who searched me every time I went to the toilet. We would sit across a table, Adam wearing a prison-issue grey tracksuit.
“He said he was sorry for what he put me through. He said he didn’t realise what he had until he’d lost it. When Ayla was tucked up in bed I would cry.”
Flounders, speaking ahead of Johnson’s release from prison, said her life “fell apart” when the footballer appeared in court.
The charges against him related to an incident in the former Sunderland winger’s Range Rover when he met up with the girl in County Durham in 2015.
He admitted grooming the girl and a separate, less serious charge of sexual activity with her.
The start of the trial was “the moment I realised who Adam really was”, Flounders said, describing him as “an arrogant man who lied and lied”.
She gave evidence during the hearing, telling the court the couple had broken up and that he had admitted cheating on her with “quite a few” women.
Flounders told the Mail on Sunday that she would remain friends with Johnson following his release for four-year-old Ayla’s sake, but vowed not to take him back.
“You can forgive but I will never forget what he has done,” she added.
