6 killed as elevator collapses in Pakistan’s Karachi

ISLAMABAD, March 10 (Xinhua) — Six laborers died on Saturday as an elevator collapsed at an under-construction building in Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi, police and local official said.

Commissioner of Karachi Iftikhar Ali Shalwani told media that a group of six laborers was installing glass sheets outside a multi-storey building when their construction elevator fell down from the 15th floor in Boat Basin area of Karachi.

Five of the laborers died on the spot while the sixth succumbed to his injuries at the Civil Hospital.

Local administration has sealed the building and launched an interrogation into the accident.

“The incident is under investigation, we are trying to know how the collapse occurred,” said the commissioner, adding that the building contractor has been called for the inquiry.
