The Harley Medical Group sees an uptake in surgery bookings for Christmas

The Harley Medical Group is reporting a 35% surge in patients booking in for surgical procedures YOY as an early present for themselves, the month before Christmas.

Many patients are taking extended Christmas holidays to ensure a full recovery is made before they return to work in the New Year. The most popular surgical procedures for Christmas 2010 include: Breast enlargement, Nose Reshaping, and Liposuction.

Lisa Littlehales, Clinic Manager at The Harley Medical Group, said: "Surgery is a life changing decision that takes a lot of careful consideration, and financial investment. Many of our patients spend at least a year saving up, and often put Christmas work bonuses into the pot as well. In some cases patient’s partners or family members also offer to contribute money towards surgery. Often they have been with them on their decision-making journey and understand how much surgery would mean to them."

Lisa continues: "Many of our patients say their confidence and self-esteem is much higher post-surgery and means they can start the New Year with a fresh new image."

Harley Medical Group reports rise in neck lift procedures

The Harley Medical Group, the UK's largest cosmetic surgery provider, has reported a 17% rise in neck lift procedures in 2009 when compared to the same period in 2008.

Wobbly or excess skin on the neck, dubbed the 'turkey neck' is a give-away sign of ageing. The skin on the neck is particularly thin making it less elastic, less supple and more fragile as the ageing process causes a decrease in collagen in the skin, meaning it is more susceptible to sagging and wrinkles.

Liz Dale, Director of the Harley Medical Group, said: "Demand for neck lift procedures were static over the summer months. Now its winter people are more inclined to take time off work for surgery and stay at home to recuperate. In these two weeks over Christmas women are literally killing the turkey neck, recovering and then re-appearing rejuvenated and fresh faced, ready to see in the New Year."

Celebrities rumoured to have given the turkey neck the chop include Sharon Osborne and Hilary Clinton.

63 year-old Brenda Scott, a face and neck lift patient at The Harley Medical Group, said: "The loose flapping skin on my neck and under my chin bothered me for years so I would cover it by wearing scarves and high-neck jumpers. I always felt young for my age but where I could help disguise the lines on my face with good make-up, my neck was more exposed."

The procedure does require an overnight stay in hospital and will require up to two weeks recovery time. The Harley Medical Group has announced it is to offer a pre and post surgery health plan, the first time ever a diet and exercise plan has been written specifically for those preparing for and recovering from surgery.

Fitness expert to the stars, Angie Best has written the guide exclusively for leading cosmetic surgery provider, The Harley Medical Group, as a part of the group's holistic approach to patient care. The Angie Best Cosmetic Surgery Optimal Health Plan identifies the nutrients and exercise regimes the body requires to prepare for surgery and promote a fast recovery following any procedure.

Lloydspharmacy reveals Britons play Russian Roulette with worlds deadliest disease

According to new research* carried out by Lloydspharmacy, the UK's leading community pharmacy chain, around 2.1million British holidaymakers and travellers are ignoring the need to protect themselves against malaria.

This may explain the alarming rise in the number of cases found in the UK, with the British Medical Journal reporting a 30% rise in malaria cases in the UK over the last 15 years**.

According to the new survey of over 1000 people, 25% had travelled to a malaria hotspot in the last five years, with the African continent the most popular of these destinations (11%). The research also found that 19% of these intrepid adventurers either ignored the risk of malaria, or abandoned their malaria medication during the danger period. Despite malaria being one of the leading causes of disease and death in the world, with an estimated 300-500 million new cases worldwide every year, resulting in 1.5 to 2.7 million deaths***, Lloydspharmacy found 9% of men and 5% of women simply relied on less effective measures like mosquito repellent, nets or Vitamin B to protect themselves from the potentially deadly disease. A worrying 11% did not even realise that they had travelled to a malarial hotspot.

The release of these findings coincides with the launch of a new complete range of prescription only anti-malarial pills which are available through the Lloydspharmacy' Online Doctor. This is one of only a few online services of its kind and does not require a visit to a GP. This service is designed to encourage travellers to stock up on the necessary anti-malaria pills before travelling

Chris Frost, Head of Medicines at Lloydspharmacy said "We are far too complacent about the risks of malaria and as a result we have one of the worst track records amongst industrialised countries for bringing this disease home from our holidays. Our new online malaria pills service aims to encourage holidaymakers to protect themselves by making it as easy as possible to access the necessary malaria pills.

"Unfortunately all it takes is just one bite from an infected mosquito to contract malaria and it can be deadly if not treated. However, buying the medication isn't enough - it will do little to protect travellers unless they follow the instructions carefully."

The Lloydspharmacy online malaria service involves the customer completing an online questionnaire which is screened by a GP from Dr Thom. If the customer meets appropriate criteria, a prescription is issued and medication distributed with advice on how to take the medication to best effect.
