npower announces award winners for August

npower has announced the winners of the players and managers awards for the npower Football League in August.

Sheffield Wednesday striker, Ryan Lowe, is the npower League 1 Player of the Month for August. Lowe netted four league goals and three in the Carling Cup for Bury before making a deadline day switch to Wednesday.

Sky Sports' Football League expert, Peter Beagrie, sits on the npower Player of the Month judging panel. He said: "Ryan was the top-scorer in League 2 last season and he has continued to score goals in a higher division this season."

In the npower Championship, Middlesbrough striker, Marvin Emnes, is the npower Player of the Month for August. Emnes netted four goals during the month to help Boro to an unbeaten start and fourth place in the table.

Finally, in the npower League 2, Dagenham & Redbridge defender, Mark Arber, is the Player of the Month for August. Arber netted the only goal in a 1-0 win over Swindon Town and helped keep three clean sheets as The Daggers made an impressive start to their npower League 2 campaign.

As for the managers of the month awards, Milton Keynes Dons manager, Karl Robinson, is the npower League 1 Manager of the Month for August. Robinson led The Dons to the top of the table with five wins and a draw from their opening six games.

Former Charlton Athletic boss, Alan Curbishley, chairs the npower Manager of the Month judging panel. He said: "MK Dons have made a fantastic start to the new campaign, both in npower League 1 and the Carling Cup.

"Not only has Karl Robinson led his men to the top of the league, they are also top scorers in the division and winning games in style."

Over in the npower Championship, Brighton & Hove Albion manager, Gus Poyet, is the Manager of the Month for August. Poyet led The Seagulls to the top of the table with four wins and a draw from their first five games.

npower has announced that Terriers' fan Sam Preest will be the face of Huddersfield Town when they take on Peterborough United.

Sam, 29, originally from Aspley, West Yorks, will feature on a giant 15x6 metre banner on the side of Old Trafford – seen by thousands of people on their way into the ground on Sunday, May 29 for the npower League One play offs Final.

He won the competition – run by Football League title sponsors npower - after explaining what the Huddersfield shirt means to him. There were more than three thousand entries from football fans across the country.

Sam, who works as a finance officer at the University of Huddersfield, said on his Every shirt winner entry: "I'll always remember walking on the beach in Dubai with my Town shirt on; local people coming up to me to ask which shirt it was.

"It was great to explain about Town and its history...the fact we won the League three times in a row before Manchester United, Liverpool or anyone else."

The giant banner of Sam will be revealed on Old Trafford's East Stand in full view of the thousands of fans walking up Sir Matt Busby Way to the stadium.

Sam added: "I couldn't believe it when I found out I would be the face of Huddersfield at Old Trafford.

"It's surreal to think that my face will represent the Terriers in the biggest match of the season. I've told my close friends and family about the banner, but it will be a shock to a lot of people.

"I'll be going to the match with my Dad, Cliff. We are both season ticket holders at the Galpharm and huge fans."

The competition was part of npower's Every Shirt Has a Story campaign, which encouraged football fans across the country to submit their favourite shirt stories.

npower sponsorship manager Emma Collins said: "We're delighted to announce Sam as our Every Shirt Has a Story winner for Huddersfield.

"We hope that this helps make it a memorable day for Sam and his family, regardless of what happens on the pitch."

npower has announced the winners of the Manager of the Month awards for the npower Football League in April.

Southampton manager Nigel Adkins has been named npower League 1 Manager of the Month for April.

Adkins' side stand on the brink of promotion thanks to wins against Milton Keynes Dons, Charlton Athletic, Leyton Orient, Bristol Rovers, Brighton & Hove Albion, Hartlepool United and Brentford.

Former Charlton Athletic boss Alan Curbishley chairs the npower Football League Manager of the Month judging panel. He said: "Southampton maintained their fine form throughout April with seven wins from their eight games.

"Nigel Adkins has done a great job since his appointment and his side have all but secured promotion back to the npower Championship."

In League 2, Bury caretaker manager Richie Barker has been named npower League 2 Manager of the Month for April.

Barker took charge in March, and went on to lead his side through a six-game unbeaten run to ensure automatic promotion to npower League 1.

npower has announced the winners of the players of the month awards for the npower Football League in April.

Sheffield Wednesday striker Neil Mellor has been named npower League 1 Player of the Month for April.

Mellor, who is on loan from Preston North End, fired in six goals during the month, including vital strikes against Colchester United, Walsall and Swindon Town.

Sky Sports' Football League expert Peter Beagrie sits on the npower Football League Player of the Month judging panel. He said: "At the beginning of the month, Wednesday were hovering just above the relegation zone in 17th position.

"But Mellor's six goal contribution has helped navigate the Owls up the table - a safe distance 11 points from the drop-zone."

npower has announced the winners of the players of the month awards for npower Football League in January.

Yeovil Town's Paul Huntington has been named npower League 1 Player of the Month for January.

Defender Huntington scored three times during January - including the winner against MK Dons at Huish Park. The centre-back also helped his side keep three clean sheets, as the Glovers took 14 points during the month.

Manager Terry Skiverton said: "Paul has played a fantastic part in the run of good form we have enjoyed of late. Along with Max Ehmer he has been the rock in our defence. Awards like this will always help a player's confidence, so congratulations to Paul and all the team."

Alongside Paul Huntington, Gillingham's Cody McDonald has been named npower League 2 Player of the Month for January. McDonald, who is on loan from Norwich City, scored six goals in seven games, including a hat-trick at Stockport County, and a brace against Aldershot.

Manager Andy Hessenthaler said: "Cody has been phenomenal for us and, knowing him as I do, I'm sure that he would be the first to praise the team as a whole for his award. As an individual this award is a fantastic achievement and he thoroughly deserves all the accolades he is getting. Cody looks like he is going to score every time he goes out on the pitch at the moment.

"It took him a little while to find his feet and he had a few injuries at the start of the season, but it's all coming to fruition now and he is showing us what a quality striker he is."

In the Championship, Leicester City midfielder Richie Wellens has been named npower Player of the Month for January. Wellens helped his side notch up ten League points in January, as the Foxes maintained their challenge for a Play-Off spot.

Manager Sven Goran Eriksson said: "Richie is an exceptional footballer and he has been in superb form in recent games. His energy, effort and vision are all key attributes to his game. I have been encouraging him to shoot more too, as he has a great shot. I'm sure that Richie will be the first to thank his teammates on receipt of this award."

npower has announced the winners of the managers of the month and players of the month awards for the npower Football League in December.

Watford striker Danny Graham has been named npower Championship Player of the Month after his impressive form continued with five goals during the month of December.

Sky Sports football league expert Peter Beagrie, who sits on the judging panel, said: "Danny's season just keeps getting better and better. He has now taken his tally to 17 starts in 26 games across all competitions, and is even in the frame for the January award with three goals already."

In League 1, Hartlepool United's Sam Collins won the npower Player of the Month Award after he helped his side shut out Huddersfield Town and Bournemouth in their two league games.

Peter Beagrie continued: "Collins has been a rock at the heart of the defence, and helped thwart two of the most potent attacks in the division."

In League 2, Stockport County's Greg Tansey won the npower Player of the Month Award for his league after he scored four goals in his side's three December games.

Alan Curbishley continued: "Two away wins in December mean Mick's award is richly deserved. Huddersfield and Bournemouth have proved to be two of the division's strongest teams. To combine both victories with clean sheets ensures Hartlepool are now in Play-Off contention."

The League 2 npower Manager of the Month Award went to Gillingham boss Andy Hessenthaler after his side took maximum points for their two games against Port Vale and Macclesfield Town.

npower launches search to find Fan of the Year

npower and the Football League have launched a nationwide search to find the 'npower Fan of the Year' who will be honoured at a spectacular gala dinner at The Brewery, London in March 2011.

Supporters are now being asked to put forward fellow fans that have gone above and beyond the call of duty to support their club.

To nominate a fan for the npower Fan of the Year award, supporters can email the nominees name, their supported club, the entrants relationship to them and a summary of why they should win the award to awards@football-league.co.uk.

Entries close on Friday 14th January 2011.

The sixth annual Football League Awards event, in association with npower, will recognise footballing excellence both on the field and behind the scenes – with clubs and players awarded alongside fans.

The nominations for the npower Fan of The Year Award will be judged by an expert panel, including representatives from The Football League, the media and npower.

The Football League's head of marketing, David Malkinson said: "The Football League Football Awards has become one of the most prestigious events of the football season, and this award helps ensure that the role fans play in the game is recognised alongside that of the players they watch and the work clubs do.

npower has announced that Lynda Maries has won two massive boxes of cuddly toy football mascots for the children at Cove Infant School in Farnborough, after successfully entering a national poetry competition.

Four lines of inspired verse written by Lynda, a Learning Support Assistant at the school, won the soft toys for the pupils.

Lynda entered a competition in a national newspaper (Daily Express) to nominate a deserving cause which would appreciate the cuddly mascots, provided by npower, sponsor of the npower Football League.

Lynda's winning entry read:

"To npower, Cove Infant YRR Classes, would be in debt,
If a delivery of mascots, we were to get.
They would make phonic sessions more exciting to do,
And with money in short supply; they'd be a boost too."

Lynda's poem caught the judges' attention, and on Friday December 17th two npower girls 'played Santa' and delivered the npower donation of cuddly toys to the school.

Lynda said: "It was a shock but I'm thrilled to have won.

"The mascots will go to the reception class and will make phonics lessons much more enjoyable."

Lynda, a resident of Cove, also collected four tickets to watch her beloved Reading in the New Year, courtesy of npower.

Head teacher Mrs Jan Sampson said: "It's a great way to end the term.

"The children are over the moon with the toys."

Port Vale manager Micky Adams has been named npower League 2 manager of the month. Vale picked up eight points during the month, conceding only one goal along the way.

Former Charlton Athletic boss Alan Curbishley chairs the npower football league manager of the month judging panel. He said: "Port Vale maintained their consistent form which saw them top the npower League 2 table. Micky's side have the best defensive record in the division, meaning they're a tough team to beat."

Bristol City manager Keith Millen has been named npower Championship manager of the month. Millen's side picked up 10 points in the month, which included a win at Swansea City's Liberty Stadium.

Alan Curbishley continued: "Bristol City enjoyed a fantastic month which saw them push out of the relegation places. The win at Swansea - plus their unbeaten home record for November - ensures they are heading into the busy winter schedule in fine form."

Charlton Athletic manager Phil Parkinson has been named npower League 1 manager of the month. Parkinson's side returned to winning ways with impressive victories at Peterborough United and Swindon Town.

Alan Curbishley added: "Phil deserves the award after gaining 10 points in what is an extremely competitive division."

Doncaster Rovers striker James Hayter has been named npower Championship player of the month. Hayter netted four goals in consecutive games against Millwall, Burnley, Portsmouth and Swansea City.

Sky Sports Football League expert Peter Beagrie, who sits on the npower football league player of the month judging panel, said: "There has been pressure on Hayter to find the net while Billy Sharp is out injured. Rovers play some fantastic football, and James has stepped up to the challenge and had a superb month in front of goal. He's been a revelation."

Charlton Athletic's Johnnie Jackson has been named npower League 1 player of the month. The midfielder netted five times in four games to help get his side back on course for a promotion challenge. Jackson picked up the award after being unanimously voted for by the judging panel.

BBC Sport's Mark Clemmit said: "Jackson's impressive goal haul has really put Charlton back into contention. He's had a fantastic month."

Shrewsbury Town's Mark Wright has been named npower League 2 player of the month. The winger, on-loan from Bristol Rovers, scored six goals in four games including a hat-trick against Hereford United.

npower, energy provider, has agreed a new three-year title sponsorship with The Football League.

From the beginning of the 2010/11 season, The League's flagship competition will be titled 'The npower Football League' with its three divisions being titled 'The npower Championship', 'npower League 1' and 'npower League 2'.

Football League Chairman Lord Mawhinney said: "I am delighted to welcome npower to this new partnership with The Football League. They are a widely respected company with a strong pedigree in sports sponsorship. Their support is a huge boost to our clubs and represents the enhanced reputation of The Football League in the commercial marketplace.

"Like us, npower recognise the extraordinary attachment that Football League clubs have with people living in their local communities. This agreement will provide real benefit to those people."

As part of the new agreement, each of The League's 72 clubs will receive a grant from the npower Charity Fund for a bespoke community initiative in their local area. Fans will also be rewarded if they switch to npower for their gas and/or electricity supply.

npower will also become the new title sponsor of The Football League Community Cup, the annual six-a-side competitions for teams of mixed Under-11's and Under-13 girls played in towns and cities throughout the country, culminating in finals played at Wembley Stadium before the end of season npower Play-Off Finals.
