Liberate reveals 25% of women first consider plastic surgery between the ages of 10 and 15

Liberate Cosmetic Surgery has discovered that 25% of women that it surveyed started to first consider cosmetic surgery between the ages of 10-15 years-old.

The 3000 British women between 18 and 30 years-old who took part in the research were asked at what age they first considered cosmetic surgery, to which 25% of women answered between the ages of 10-15 years-old. 33% also answered that they had considered cosmetic surgery between the ages of 15-18 years-old.

Liberate Cosmetic Surgery views this as quite an interesting yet shocking statistic, as it shows a large number of people may be considering plastic surgery from a very young age.

Mr Paul Banwell, consultant plastic surgeon at Liberate commented: "There is no doubt that more and more younger people are considering cosmetic surgery and breast augmentation still remains the number 1 procedure. However, the statistics regarding the age at which women are first considering surgery is quite shocking."

The research was conducted by One Poll in February 2011; surveying 3000 British women aged 18 - 30 regarding their feelings about their appearance and their attitudes towards cosmetic surgery. It wanted to explore issues young women face surrounding cosmetic surgery, look at current trends and find out what young women know and don't know about surgery.

Liberate reveals almost half of women teased about their looks consider cosmetic surgery

Liberate, the cosmetic surgery group, has been completing some public research around some shock topics, with the most notable revealing that almost half of the women consulted who were bullied at school have considered cosmetic surgery in order to 'fix' themselves.

The 3000 British women between 18 and 30 years-old who took part in the research were asked if they had ever been bullied, teased or targeted about their appearance, to which 47.45% answered yes and 52.57% answered no. Out of the women who answered yes to the first question, 43.5% of them said they would consider cosmetic surgery to fix the problem.

These results from the Liberate public research show that at some point around half of the women surveyed were bullied, and around half of these women would consider getting cosmetic surgery because they believe this would 'fix' the issue which was causing them to be bullied in the first place.

Liberate believes this is a shocking statistic, as people who are being bullied should be equipped with the proper tools to deal with it financially, physically and psychologically instead of opting for cosmetic surgery without making an informed and responsible choice.

The research was conducted by One Poll in February 2011 in order to record women's feeling about their appearance and their attitudes towards to cosmetic surgery. Liberate wanted to explore issues young women face surrounding cosmetic surgery, look at current trends and find out what young women know and don't know about surgery.

The Harley Medical Group, Ireland's leading cosmetic surgery provider, has revealed breast surgery is top of the ops for the 23rd year running and the fastest growing sector of cosmetic surgery. The Harley Medical Group has seen a positive increase on last year’s enquiries. While breast reductions are becoming more popular with an increasing number of Irish women reducing their breast size in order to achieve a more slender figure, breast augmentation continues to be the most popular procedure performed at THMG’s Dublin clinic.

Pauline Hughes, Dublin Clinic Manager for The Harley Medical Group commented: "There is a noticeable upward trend for post-breast feeding breast augmentation procedures. 31 % of breast implant procedures performed at the THMG clinic over the past 12 months have been for women that come into this bracket. In the previous 12 months, this figure was in the region of 24%.

"The age profile of women presenting for post-breast feeding breast augmentation is late 20s to mid 30s years. The Harley Medical Group reports that it has seen a steady increase in breast reduction procedures in the UK. With breast surgery still top of the ops in the cosmetic surgery field, wanting to appear slimmer is an increasingly common motivator for women having breast reductions. The average dress size for women these days is a 16 and many women have at least a size D bust. By decreasing chest size it helps women to look and feel thinner and also helps them in their quest to get fit and lose weight. Large breasts can cause back and neck troubles and also restricts women when trying to exercise - oversized and heavy breasts can be a huge inconvenience on women’s lives."

It was awful because a real passion of mine was running but I would have to wear two extra supportive sports bras and would often feel embarrassed when going to the gym. The Harley Medical Group has reported thousands of enquiries for liposuction over the last month as a wave of what is termed 'beach envy' - jealousy of other women's bodies - hit holidaymakers.

The rise has been driven largely by 30-plus women, with clinic staff reporting patient feedback that suggests Victoria Beckham has the most coveted star stomach. Abdominoplasty surgery enquiries are also up 32% over the last two months with some patients even taking their summer holidays as 'surgery breaks', using the time off to recover before returning to work rejuvenated.

Liz Dale, Director of The Harley Medical Group said: "You can get liposuction on various areas of the body, not just the stomach area. It can be used to target problem areas such as the hips, buttocks, inner and outer thighs, knees and double chins.

Liposuction is performed under a general anaesthetic and takes one to two hours. A very small incision is used to insert the cannula to extract the fat and sometimes this is closed with a stitch or dissolvable suture. The Harley Medical Group has reported demand from male patients for laser rejuvenation treatments is up +93% over the last quarter, across its 30 clinics.

Laser rejuvenation treatments now account for 11% of all non-surgical treatments carried out during June, July and August at the UK’s largest cosmetic surgery group. More unusual requests received this year are for skin regeneration treatments on receding hairlines, including laser treatment and chemical peels to reduce the appearance of aging sun spots.

Rejuvenation treatments can help minimise the visible signs of aging skin."

Over the last week, The Harley Medical Group has seen a 26% increase in bookings from men wanting anti-sweat Botox treatments, dubbed 'Sweatox'. As the summer months fast approach, amidst reports of record temperatures, increasing numbers of men across the UK are opting for Sweatox.

Used to prevent the embarrassment of slippery handshakes, unsightly underarm sweat patches and office shirts sticking to damp chests Botox injections work by freezing sweat glands, stopping perspiration in the palms of the hands, under arms, chest and soles of the feet. The effects last up to six months, so many men are preparing getting prepared for the rumoured sizzling summer ahead in the UK.

The Harley Medical Group's latest poll has found that many UK adults confess that a politician's appearance influences the way they vote, and Brown comes out bottom of the pile for style.

Never before have politicians been under such scrutiny for their outward appearance as this year, with the series of public debates. Now, a new poll out by The Harley Medical Group reveals that over a quarter (26%) of people confessed that a politician's appearance influences the way they vote, whilst a further 29% said it may sway their vote.

The Harley Medical Group's survey of 2,000 adults also showed that the party leaders clearly aren't getting enough sleep with respondents agreeing that all three would benefit from cosmetic surgery to remove their eyebags. However, almost three times more respondents (61%) suggested Gordon Brown should opt for the scalpel on his eye bags, with just 27% and 28% urging David Cameron and Nick Clegg respectively, to do the same.

If looks and wives could decide the election alone then Cameron could be forgiven for feeling confident, not only does he come top in the style stakes but 43% of respondents say that if they had to vote for one of the candiates' wives instead of them, they'd elect Samantha Cameron - the youngest and most natural of the three wives at 39 years old.

The Harley Medical Group has reported a 9% (year-on-year) rise in women aged 40+ years booking in for anti-aging surgery and non-surgical procedures as an ever-growing number of older women in the public eye get into relationships with men markedly their junior. The group has also noted a spike in the number of divorcees investing in cosmetic procedures to help them find new confidence.

Clinic staff have reported that many female patients aged 40+ are increasingly using divorce settlement money to fund cosmetic procedures. Liz Dale, director at The Harley Medical Group, commented, "We've all read about Sharon Stone, Janice Dickinson, and Sam Taylor-Wood embarking on affairs with younger men but it's not just celebrities who are looking for new relationships in middle-age. Women aged 40-plus are increasingly citing embarking on a new relationship as a reason for undergoing rejuvenation treatments. We estimate that around 30% of our 40+ patients are divorcees."

Mark Keenan the founder of the online divorce service, Divorce Online, commented: "Women are increasingly factoring in extra money in their divorce settlements for cosmetic treatments. After a stressful, unhappy divorce period many want to overhaul their life and often having a relationship with a younger man helps them feel energised. The Harley Medical Group is launching a new advertising campaign designed to highlight the more practical solutions offered by cosmetic and non surgical procedures.

The UK's largest cosmetic surgery company hopes to tap into the day-to-day concerns of the ‘ordinary' person to demonstrate how, contrary to some common perception, cosmetic solutions can give less dramatic and more functional beauty solutions.

The adverts, designed by Medicine Man, include an image of the bottom half of a bikini-clad woman's body with the tag line "Bad hair day…ever considered laser hair removal."

Another highlights how on average a woman will shave her legs 11,500 times - suggesting laser hair removal as a safe, permenant and hassle-free alternative.

Liz Dale, Director, The Harley Medical Group commented, "The adverts are now appearing on the back-end of buses across the UK. We deliberately set out create advertising that will make people do a double-take and demonstrate clearly how cosmetic and non surgical treatments can be an effective solution to unwanted hair or the removal of stubborn fat ."

The series of five adverts cover liposuction, breast surgery, lines and wrinkles treatments and laser hair removal.

The Harley Medical Group has revealed that Scottish people are five times more likely to have cosmetic surgery than the average person. 5% of Scottish men and women say they would have, or have already had cosmetic surgery, while one in ten would opt for non-surgical solutions, such as Botox. The findings come as The Harley Medical Group adds a new Glasgow clinic – the fifth new clinic opening over the past year – to its UK and Ireland portfolio, bringing the total estate to 28 clinics, with Edinburgh and many other in the pipeline for 2010.

Following the announcement last year that craggy Scot, Gordon Ramsey, has fillers in his chin to soften deep lines, it's perhaps less of a surprise that over 4% of Scottish men would have cosmetic surgical or non-surgical treatments. Scottish women are also looks conscious with 7% of them admitting they would have cosmetic procedures, and 17% would look to battle aging with non-surgical solutions.

Scottish men cite native sex symbol Gerard Butler as the person whose looks and physique they most covet. Meanwhile, women admire the way Helen Mirren has held back the years, despite being in her 60s. The actress, who says she would certainly consider having cosmetic surgery, was named by 15% of Scottish women, as the person they most aspire to look like.

Scottish patients, who have been travelling to Newcastle, Liverpool and Manchester clinics now have a brand new facility on their doorstep.

"We're already booked out to the middle of next month. Treatments for rosacea, which is redness of the skin, and laser treatments for sun damage have been proving very popular. The most enquired about surgical procedures to date has been breast reduction by men and for women it is breast augmentation and uplift, with Liposuction a close 2nd for both males and females

The Harley Medical Group's Glasgow clinic is situated in Somerset Place in the city centre and clinic its staff there are hoping they'll overtake London's City clinic as the capital of non-surgical injectibles. Botox is one of the most in demand procedure in Scotland, with over 150 enquiries already to date at the new clinic. The number of female and male patients investing in non-surgical procedures is expected to be galvanised by visitors from the 'square kilometre financial district in Glasgow's city centre.

The Harley Medical Group, the UK’s largest cosmetic surgery provider, is reporting increased enquiries into non-surgical eyebrow lifts of around 39%, as women across the UK try to emulate the look of the stars.

A spokesperson at The Harley Medical Group commented: "The non-surgical side of the business has seen real growth over the past year and our non-surgical specialists are seeing an increase in ‘combination treatments’, which offer affordable and effective solutions for lines and wrinkles. The eyebrow lift is a safe, lunchtime treatment, with the striking effect of reducing lines and opening up the area around the eye."

According to staff at The Harley Medical Group clinics across the country, the increase in enquiries has been noticeable, with Angelina Jolie as the star possessing the looks which most women want their eyebrows to imitate. This impact on enquiries has been felt most within the London area, where the greatest increase in enquiries has been experienced.

Dr Nick Milojevic, Cosmetic doctor at The Harley Medical Group, commented, "The eyebrow lift is achieved with a combination of Botox and dermal fillers. The resulting effect gives a smooth, wrinkle free brow and helps make eyes appear larger and more open."

Brows can be non-surgically lifted with a combination of Botox into the brow area, followed by an injection of dermal fillers into the arch of the eyebrow. The treatment is most effective if patients have an injection of Botox initially and then have the fillers treatment two weeks later. The Botox helps even out wrinkles and tighten the skin, while fillers add volume to plump and smooth creases. Results last for six to nine months.

With Valentine's Day just around the corner, The Harley Medical Group has seen an increase in bookings for laser hair removal on the bikini line. The Harley Medical Group, has identified an annual spike in enquires around this time of year as women prepare for the romantic night. The treatment usually requires six to eight courses of laser treatments.

Laser hair removal is proven to permanently remove hair so, unlike with waxing, regrowth is not an issue.

Harley Medical Group reports rise in neck lift procedures

The Harley Medical Group, the UK's largest cosmetic surgery provider, has reported a 17% rise in neck lift procedures in 2009 when compared to the same period in 2008.

Wobbly or excess skin on the neck, dubbed the 'turkey neck' is a give-away sign of ageing. The skin on the neck is particularly thin making it less elastic, less supple and more fragile as the ageing process causes a decrease in collagen in the skin, meaning it is more susceptible to sagging and wrinkles.

Liz Dale, Director of the Harley Medical Group, said: "Demand for neck lift procedures were static over the summer months. Now its winter people are more inclined to take time off work for surgery and stay at home to recuperate. In these two weeks over Christmas women are literally killing the turkey neck, recovering and then re-appearing rejuvenated and fresh faced, ready to see in the New Year."

Celebrities rumoured to have given the turkey neck the chop include Sharon Osborne and Hilary Clinton.

63 year-old Brenda Scott, a face and neck lift patient at The Harley Medical Group, said: "The loose flapping skin on my neck and under my chin bothered me for years so I would cover it by wearing scarves and high-neck jumpers. I always felt young for my age but where I could help disguise the lines on my face with good make-up, my neck was more exposed."
