British Airways unveils winning dove design for London 2012 aircraft

The design of the British Airways aircraft to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be 'The Dove' by up and coming British designer Pascal Anson. His artwork beat hundreds of entries in the BA Great Britons Programme, and was chosen by a judging panel including Turner-prize nominated artist and Royal Academician Tracey Emin, the Royal Academy of Arts and the airline.

As BA Great Britons mentor, Tracey Emin has advised Pascal during the project, and said: "It would have been easy to put a motif or a pattern on the side of an aircraft but Pascal's design takes it to another level. He uses the entire livery of the aircraft to redefine the way you look at it. The dove is a stunning piece of work and will bring real excitement to anyone who flies on one of the repainted planes."

The 38 year-old designer and artist from Brighton, also a Design Tutor at Kingston University, has spent the past few months honing his design with Emin. It will be emblazoned across a number of British Airways aircraft and seen by a global audience of millions.

BA Great Britons winner Pascal Anson, said: "On my journeys from Brighton to London, I've often looked up at aircraft landing at Gatwick and wondered if it’s a 'bird or a plane', and the idea developed from there. When I started researching birds further I realised it had to be a dove. Not only are they a symbol of peace and social unity, but they were also used in previous Olympic Games ceremonies, including the last London Games in 1948."

To create an illusion of a dove, Pascal spent hours in a cote observing the birds. He incorporates their intricate detail on the livery, which will use a new colour of paint produced by the British Airways engineering team and its suppliers.

Frank van der Post, British Airways managing director, brands and customer experience, said: "When we invited up and coming British artists to submit a design to celebrate the London 2012 Games, we didn't expect a concept that would change the way we look at the aircraft - yet Pascal's work has achieved this and we're very proud to be sharing it with the world on our giant flying canvas."

The BA Great Britons Programme was launched to discover the best of British talent in Art, as well as Food and Film and offer British talent a platform in the run up to the London 2012 Games. Pascal's aircraft launch will coincide with the unveiling of a London 2012 inspired menu, created by Simon Hulstone with support from Michelin-star restaurant owner and chef Heston Blumenthal, and short film written by Prasanna Puwanarajah with mentoring from scriptwriter and director Richard E Grant. All three projects will be unveiled to the public in April.

British Airways flies newly refurbished Boeing 777-200

British Airway's customers flying on a recent Boston flight were the first to experience the airline's very latest seats and cabins following the first complete refit of one of BA's Boeing 777-200s.

The aircraft was the first of 18 to be fitted with British Airways' recently launched First cabin, new World Traveller and World Traveller Plus cabins and the airline's latest Thales in-flight entertainment system.

The multi-million pound refurbishment gives the 18 Boeing 777-200s the same contemporary interiors as British Airways' six brand new Boeing 777-300ERs.

Frank van der Post, British Airways' managing director of brands and customer experience, said: "This exciting and ambitious refit now brings our 777s right up to date, with new interiors and the very latest inflight entertainment system.

"We have had fantastic customer reaction to our new fleet of Boeing 777-300ERs, which originally showcased our new cabins, and we know those who travel on these 18 aircraft will be equally impressed with our investment.

"Customers will be able to enjoy the very best travel experience British Airways has to offer, with more comfortable seats and brighter, more contemporary cabins."

Over the next five years British Airways will be investing more than £5bn in new aircraft, smarter cabins, elegant lounges, and new technologies to make life more comfortable in the air and on the ground.

It takes British Airways' Cardiff-based engineers, at the airline's Welsh maintenance base, approximately a month, or 5,700 man hours, to carefully remove a 777's old seats and interiors and replace them with the airline's very latest cabins.

Each aircraft will also have a staggering 13 kilometres of wiring removed and new fibre optic cables installed to power the new in-flight entertainment system.

New widescreens will be fitted in Club World and customers flying on these refitted Boeing 777-200s will also be able to experience the airline's sophisticated new First cabin.

New seats and cabins in World Traveller Plus and World Traveller, feature the latest cushioning technology and in-seat power sockets.

The Thales in-flight entertainment system offers over 700 hours of movies, TV and music options on demand; that's more than 230 TV programmes, 70 films and 400 CDs, providing customers with 50 per cent more choice on movies and doubling the range of TV and music options, as well as plug and play technology.

Each cabin also gets bigger, high-resolution widescreens: customers in World Traveller will be able to watch TV and films on 35 per cent larger video touchscreens (now 8.9 inches); in World Traveller Plus they are 60 per cent larger (now 10.6 inches); Club World widescreens increase by 16.3 per cent (now 12.1 inches) while the new First screens increase by 275 per cent (now 15.4 inches)

British Airways announces selection of Christmas market city breaks

British Airways has announced that it is kicking off the festive period with a selection of Christmas Market city-breaks for the entire family to enjoy.

Included in the airline's selection of Christmas market cities is Berlin. Customers can visit Berlin, the capital city of Christmas Markets with over 60 to wander around, including the market at Charlottenburg Castle, which boasts over 150 stalls and Winter World at Potzdamer Platz. It also hosts the largest mobile toboggan run in Europe and an ice skating rink for the less daring.

British Airways launches flights and holidays to Mauritius from London Gatwick

British Airways is changing its Mauritius timetable to give customers an extra day in the sun this winter.

Flights back from the Indian Ocean isle will take off 12 hours later than at present, creating more time for relaxation before travellers have to get their flights to London.

The better timing coincides with the route being switched from Heathrow to Gatwick, further strengthening the airline's premium leisure programme at the airport. British Airways has recently opened the new state-of-the-art terminal extension at Gatwick, which will be home to all British Airways flights at Gatwick. It is designed to give customers more control of their journey, as well as providing an innovative travelling experience using the most advanced technology and a new approach to customer service.

The new British Airways terminal extension allows passengers to do more for themselves, from checking-in and choosing seats to printing their own bag tags.

Silla Maizey, director of Gatwick, said: "We have a strong premium leisure strategy for Gatwick - we want it to be a hub for great high-end holiday destinations. Moving the Mauritius flight here helps us to strengthen this position as it will now sit alongside destinations such as the Maldives and the Caribbean.

British Airways wins award for worldwide charity support

British Airways has been given a major award for the support it provides to charities around the world. The airline was one of three companies to be given a Word Tourism Award at a ceremony at the World Travel Market, in Excel, East London before a specially invited audience.

British Airways received the award in recognition of its annual investment of over £5m to support more than 50 charities and community programmes, through free flights, cargo space and expert advice, around the world as well as in the UK.

The World Tourism Awards, celebrating its 14th Anniversary, is co-sponsored by American Express, Corinthia Hotels, the International Herald Tribune and Reed Travel Exhibitions to recognise 'the extraordinary initiatives by individuals, companies, organisations, destinations and attractions for outstanding accomplishments in the travel industry'.

Mary Barry, British Airways' community investment manager, said: "This award belongs to the thousands of generous British Airways customers and colleagues who dig deep into their own pockets or who give up valuable time to help us support scores of charities around the world.

"Without their generosity we would not be able to provide the much-needed support to our 'Flying Start' partnership with Comic Relief that does incredible work to change the lives of so many vulnerable and disadvantaged people.

Royal couple send off British Airways relief flight to East Africa

British Airways responded to a UNICEF appeal, which is being backed by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, to help the 13 million victims of the East African crisis by sending a relief flight full of aid to the region.

In their first joint humanitarian mission, the royal couple toured a British Airways' relief plane, a Boeing 747, at Copenhagen airport on Wednesday, November 2 following their visit to UNICEF's warehouse in Denmark's capital.

Keith Williams, British Airways' CEO, said: "We immediately agreed to donate an aircraft to help UNICEF get their aid to East Africa. The team at British Airways has launched a number of these flights in recent years to crisis-hit areas such as Haiti and Japan so we're well practised in getting the aircraft and team out as soon as possible. We need to help keep a focus on the crisis in East Africa so this is our second relief flight to the region. We're delighted the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be seeing the flight off."

The aircraft, operating under flight number BA9116C, departed Copenhagen International Airport at 1800 hours (local time) en route for Nairobi laden with 45 tonnes of UNICEF aid including life saving emergency medical supplies to help children affected by diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea.

The eight-hour flight was operated by a team of three pilots and four cabin crew. Also on board were British Airways engineering staff who were responsible for loading and unloading the aid, and a member of UNICEF's supply staff.

As well as filling the cargo hold, the aircraft's cabins, which would normally be full of passengers flying to destinations such as Los Angeles and Hong Kong, were commandeered to ensure as much aid as possible reaches the stricken region.

UNICEF UK's Executive Director, David Bull, commented: "We know that when children are malnourished their immune systems are weakened and they become very susceptible to life threatening diseases such as cholera and diarrhoea. We need to help these children urgently. The supplies being packed on this plane will help UNICEF to save these children's lives. On behalf of everyone at UNICEF I want to extend my huge thanks to all at British Airways who have helped make this happen."

It is more than three months since famine was declared in parts of East Africa, following the worst drought in 50 years, which has devastated food sources across Dijbouti, Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia. Without rain for two successive seasons, crops failed and livestock perished. Food prices soared, forcing at least 600,000 people to flee their villages in search of food, water and medicine, making treacherous journeys to refugee camps. At least 13 million people require assistance and half of those are children.

British Airways offer free ski carriage on London City flights this winter

British Airways is offering winter sports fans the chance to fly their skis for free to the top three ski destinations from London City Airport.

Customers who book flights to Chambery, Geneva or Zurich before October 31 will be invited to take an extra piece of hold luggage on flights between December and March.

This is in addition to the existing free one bag allowance and can be used for skis or other winter sports equipment.

British Airways currently operates seven flights a week from London City to Geneva and 22 flights a week to Zurich. From December 17 the four times a week winter only services to Chambery will begin.

All inclusive one-way fares to all three destinations are available to book on ba.com. All fares include free on-line check in and seat selection up to 24 hours before departure, no debit card charges and complimentary food and drinks on board the aircraft.

British Airways' business-only flights to New York make their mark after two years

British Airways is celebrating the second anniversary of its unique business class-only service between London City and New York's JFK.

Launched in the middle of a deep recession, the service has defied sceptics to win over business travellers flying between two of the world’s biggest financial centres.

Since it was launched on September 29, 2009, 97 per cent of the service's flights to New York have departed on time from London City, while 90 per cent of flights to London have departed on time from New York.

And now British Airways is using the very latest technology by providing customers with their own 64GB iPads to watch the service's bespoke in-flight entertainment options.

Richard Tams, British Airways’ head of UK&I sales and marketing, said: "Despite the economic downturn, there is no doubt that the service has become a firm favourite with many of our customers on the important London to New York route.

"With easy access from the City and Canary Wharf, a 15-minute check-in to departure, in-flight texting and internet access, it has been tailor-made to provide them with the most productive way to fly across the Atlantic.

"We're very pleased to be marking the two-year anniversary of this exclusive service and will continue with more innovations to meet our customer's needs."

In addition to iPads loaded with specially chosen content to give customers a bespoke in-flight entertainment experience, British Airways is also trialling the use of iPads with pursers on the route to bring a new dimension to customer service in the air.

Each iPad is specially loaded with British Airways apps designed to give cabin crew information on customers, from their previous travel arrangements, to connecting flights and special meal requests, enabling them to offer a truly personalised service.

They also give cabin crew a library of information at their fingertips, including timetables, safety manuals and customer service updates. Thanks to the service's OnAir connectivity, updates can also be delivered to the crew during the flight, which can then be given to customers.

It is expected that the new technology will be appreciated by customers who have already rated the service with consistently high customer satisfaction scores since the double daily business-class only route began.

The Airbus A318 aircraft operates with a maximum of 32 fully flat seats onboard and offers customers 15-minute check-in to departure and US customs clearance in Shannon, Ireland, where the flight stops westward for a brief refuelling.

The London - New York route is an important market for British Airways, which flies eight times daily to JFK from Heathrow and three times a day to Newark. British Airways adds First and business class to Moscow flights

For the first time, customers on British Airways' London Heathrow to Moscow service will be able to sample the airline’s award-winning services in First and business class from next year.

The changes were announced during a UK trade delegation to Russia hosted by Prime Minister, David Cameron, alongside several major British business leaders.

British Airways has three return flights to Moscow Domodedevo airport per day. From April 2012, this route will change from a short-haul service operated with two cabins to a long-haul operation offering customers up to four classes of travel. This means customers will have the opportunity to enjoy the airline’s fully flat-beds, comprehensive in-flight entertainment and sample a wide selection of meals and drinks in unrivalled comfort. No other airline currently offers such a premium service on the four-hour flight between the two capital cities

Sir Martin Broughton, chairman of British Airways, who accompanied David Cameron to Moscow to represent British business, said: "We are proud to have been flying to Russia for over fifty years. British Airways Cabin Crew to use iPads to revolutionise customer service

British Airways cabin crew are using the latest iPad model to bring a new dimension to customer service in the air.

The iPads enable cabin crew to have prior awareness of customer preferences and a greater understanding of each customer’s previous travel arrangements, allowing them to offer a truly bespoke, personalised service.

The iPad lets crew quickly identify where each customer is seated, who they are travelling with, their Executive Club status and any special meal requests. It gives cabin crew a whole library of information at their fingertips including timetables, safety manuals and customer service updates. It also means any issues can be logged with ground-based colleagues around the network prior to departure so solutions can be delivered while the flight is airborne.

When all the passengers have boarded and just before the doors are shut, cabin crew are currently handed a long scroll of paper, listing up to 337 customers. With the new iPads cabin crew will simply refresh their screen when the doors have closed through wireless 3G networks and they will have a complete list of passengers on board.

Bill Francis, British Airways' head of in-flight customer experience, said: "The iPad is already allowing us to offer a more personalised onboard service, but the possibilities for future development are endless. We’re receiving great feedback from cabin crew and customers already. It allows the crew to offer the thoughtful service they want to deliver and customers are treated as valued guests."

The iPad is currently being trialled with 100 cabin crew with the aim to roll it out to all senior crew members across the airline in the coming months.

British Airways provides East Africa relief flight

British Airways has flown a relief aircraft full of emergency supplies and equipment to victims of the food crisis in East Africa, where over half a million people are directly at risk of starvation.

A Boeing 747 freighter with capacity for up to 110 tonnes of cargo, flew to Ethiopia on Friday, August 12, carrying aid from Oxfam and UNICEF.

Following severe droughts, resulting in the worst food crisis the world has seen for 20 years, the two charities are among those working in the region to bring much-needed relief to over 12 million people at risk from famine, disease and drought across Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia.

The aircraft carried 5,000 meters of pipe from Oxfam, which will be used to supply much-needed water to the Dolo Ado refugee camp in Ethiopia, as well as vital emergency food and medical supplies from UNICEF.

British Airways' customers are also playing their part. For two weeks from August 1, all donations onboard every British Airways flight were going to the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) appeal for East Africa.

British Airways began helping the relief effort by carrying over seven and a half tonnes of water tanks, tapstands, pipes and water pumps from Oxfam as free cargo on a scheduled flight to Nairobi.

The airline also gave Oxfam free flights to Kenya to get 40 relief experts into the worst affected areas as quickly as possible.

Keith Williams, British Airways' chief executive, said: "The worst drought in 50 years means the lives of millions of people hang in the balance. The generosity of our customers will make a real and tangible difference to those in desperate need.

"It is vital that we get aid from charities like Oxfam and UNICEF to the most seriously affected areas across East Africa. We want to do what we can to help those caught up in this terrible crisis."

Barbara Stocking, Oxfam's chief executive, said: "We have been moved to see the generosity of the British public over the last month and Oxfam is now reaching over a million people in East Africa. But there is still much more to be done.

"British Airways is showing incredible hands-on support for the relief effort, delivering vital supplies straight to where they are so desperately needed and flying our emergency staff into the region to work on the ground.

"Not only is their support worth over £250,000 in cost savings to Oxfam but the donations from their customers to the DEC will help fund even more life-saving work in the region."

David Bull, UNICEF UK's executive director, said: "When children are facing famine, because crops have failed, because food is scarce, it’s time to share a little of what we’ve got. British Airways has been extremely generous in sharing its cargo space.

"This means that UNICEF can buy more emergency food supplies and can deliver life saving food to hungry children much faster. In South Somalia alone, 250 children are dying every day.

"British Airways responded to UNICEF’s appeal and donated their cargo space travelling to the Horn of Africa. We urge all airlines to follow this fantastic example and share whatever they can."

British Airways launch pilot recruitment drive

British Airways has launched its biggest pilot recruitment drive in more than 10 years.

The airline plans to take on more than 800 new pilots by 2016, using three combined recruitment programmes:

- A new programme to help people to train to become airline pilots for the first time, called the 'Future Pilot Programme'.
- Recruitment of qualified pilots from other airlines
- A joint initiative with the UK Armed Forces to provide military pilots with a planned career path into commercial aviation.

The British Airways Future Pilot Programme will help about 400 applicants to gain a place at an approved flight training school, with successful candidates landing a job as a British Airways pilot.

Previously people have been prevented or deterred from starting a career as an airline pilot, due to the initial private training costs of around £100,000, which they have had to find themselves. This programme helps students to secure funding to train as a pilot which they can pay back later in their career.

The airline is also using YouTube as a recruitment tool for the first time. Anyone interested in becoming British Airways' next generation of pilots can learn more about the programme and hear useful advice from current pilots from the clip on the company's dedicated YouTube site.

Captain Robin Glover, head of pilot recruitment at British Airways, said: "The Future Pilot Programme is a fantastic opportunity for anyone, from any background to realise their ambition of becoming a pilot and flying for British Airways.

"By removing the barrier of initial training costs and making it more accessible to a wider range of people, we hope to be able to attract the very best talent out there.

British Airways is flying a relief aircraft full of emergency supplies and equipment to East Africa, where over 12 million people are at risk from famine, disease and drought.

A Boeing 747 freighter with capacity for up to 110 tonnes of cargo flew from Stansted airport today (12 August) to Ethiopia. The aircraft is carrying 5,000 meters of pipe from Oxfam, which will be used to supply much-needed water to the Dolo Ado refugee camp in Ethiopia, as well as vital emergency food and medical supplies from UNICEF.

Keith Williams, British Airways’ chief executive, said: “The worst drought in 50 years means the lives of millions of people hang in the balance. It is vital that we get aid from charities like Oxfam and UNICEF to the most seriously affected areas across East Africa. We want to do what we can to help those caught up in this terrible crisis.”

Oxfam is among those working in the region and aims to reach some 3 million people across Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia.

Jane Cocking, Oxfam’s humanitarian director, who was at the airport when the flight departed, said: “It was a moving sight to see the aircraft being loaded with Oxfam’s supplies today. It is thanks to the huge support we have received from the British public and organisations such as British Airways that we can get this vital equipment to where it is needed.

“The pipe we are flying out today will be used to channel life-saving clean water over an incredible 5km into the Dolo Ado refugee camp in Ethiopia; where close to 2,000 desperate people are arriving every day.”

The BA8590, crewed by British Airways’ partners Global Supply Systems, departed from Stansted Airport at 9.15am flying direct to Addis Ababa, in Ethiopia, where aid will be unloaded and taken to the worst affected areas.

British Airways has revealed its top holiday destinations for travellers still wanting to get away in August for a late summer getaway.

Favourite locations for travellers include hotspots in destinations such as North America, Caribbean holidays, Indian Ocean and Europe. With increased frequencies of flights to Barbados, St Lucia, Antigua and Tampa in Florida this summer, customers now have increased choices when it comes to leisure destinations.

British Airways celebrate one year to go to the London 2012 Olympic Games

British Airways, the official airline partner of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, is emblazoning 'One Year to Go' onto the belly of an Airbus A318 aircraft, to celebrate the milestone 365-day countdown to the start of the Olympic Games.

Flight 'BA001' from London City Airport to New York will display the celebratory message on its underbelly, as it departs at 1.05pm flying past the Olympic Park just minutes later.

It is expected that the message will be visible to those in parts of East London and at the Olympic Park. Footage will also be made available at youtube.com/flybritishairways.

Garry Copeland, British Airways director of engineering, said: "This is the first time in the history of British Airways that we have branded the entire underbelly of an aircraft with a celebratory message. We hope it will bring a real sense of excitement to the Olympic Park and people living around the area.

"With the countdown underway, British Airways is preparing to welcome the world to Great Britain in 2012."

Customers will not miss the celebrations either - British Airways Captains will highlight that there's only one year to go until the 2012 Games to customers on board flights on the day.

British Airways reveals Gatwick airport is top choice for families this year

British Airways has revealed that more families than ever are choosing to fly from Gatwick airport as they jet off on holiday this year.

The airline has already seen a ten per cent increase in family bookings compared to last year and the trend is set to continue through the summer.

In July and August, British Airways will serve around 7,000 child meals on its long haul and European flights from Gatwick, and cabin crew will give out over 26,000 special Paddington Bear Skyflyer packs to keep its young customers entertained.

Florida is the number one destination for British Airways from Gatwick during the school holidays, offering 14 flights a week to the Sunshine State, with daily flights to Tampa and Orlando.

Parents travelling with children can benefit from family check-in and the chance to choose seats together free of charge 24 hours before departure.

On long haul flights children also have their own television channels as well as a choice of family movies on the in flight entertainment system.

Gatwick is the only UK airport, to join a new Family Friendly scheme launched by the Family and Parenting Institute which aims to make the UK more family friendly.

Over the past 18 months, the airport has rolled out a number of family friendly initiatives to help take the stress out of travel for families, particularly those with young children in tow.

In Spring 2010, Gatwick became the only UK airport to create separate security lanes – "Assistance lanes" - to give families travelling with young children in buggies extra help through security after checking-in.

Earlier this year, it also created dedicated "kids zones" in the departure lounges of both terminals for children aged between 0-5 years to enable parents and guardians to relax while their children are kept entertained.

Stewart Wingate, Chief Executive of Gatwick Airport said: "Millions of families choose to travel through Gatwick airport every year. We realise that travelling with children can be stressful, so we’re going out of our way to make their journey through the airport more enjoyable. That's why we’re proud to be supporting the Family Friendly scheme."

The second most popular long haul holiday hot spot for British Airways customers is Barbados and there are still some family holidays in Barbados available there and many other destinations from Gatwick, including many with free night offers and kids stay free.

British Airways has also introduced the family favourite destination of Malaga to its Gatwick schedule, moving the service moved from Heathrow and almost doubling frequency to 27 flights a week.
