Ulster Bank Launches 18th Annual 'Ulster Bank Business Achievers Awards'

Northern Ireland companies are being invited to enter the annual ‘Ulster Bank Business Achievers Awards’ which recognise business success, irrespective of offering, size, sector or location across the island of Ireland. The awards, now in their 18th year, are in association with Invest Northern Ireland, Enterprise Ireland and InterTradeIreland, and supported by the Belfast Telegraph.

Throughout each stage of the competition, companies will be judged on a variety of merits including financial performance, company milestones and achievements, future strategy for the business and development of innovative products and services.

Entries for the 2011 awards are open to businesses across all sectors and businesses can enter themselves in up to two of eight categories:

1. Innovation & Emerging Technology Award *
2. International Business Award
3. Social Entrepreneurship Award
4. Best Business Start-up Award *
5. Family Run Business Award
6. Green Business Award
7. Agriculture, Food & Drink Award
8. Service Business Award

*Businesses started in 2009, 2010 and 2011 only are eligible for these categories

Following an initial judging process at the preliminary stage of the awards, competing businesses will be shortlisted for provincial awards. Provincial award winners will then go on to compete in their respective categories at an all-island awards ceremony in 2012 where one category winner will also be crowned overall ‘Ulster Bank Business Achiever 2011’. Entries will close on Wednesday, 30th November, and the Provincial Award Winners will be announced at award ceremonies in January and February 2012.

Provincial and category winners will receive a specially commissioned award, PR opportunities, entry into the all-island awards and a dedicated profile page on the Ulster Bank Business Achievers Awards website.

Over 400 businesses, North and South, entered last year’s awards, where Belfast based scientific digital camera company, Andor Technology, was awarded the ‘International Business Award’ and crowned ‘Ulster Bank Business Achiever 2010’. North West business BubbleBum won the all-island Start-Up Business Category.

Speaking at the launch of the 2011 awards, Ian Jordan, Head of Business and Commercial Banking Northern Ireland, Ulster Bank said, “The awards received a record number of entries last year, including very strong entry levels in Northern Ireland, and highlighted some incredibly strong examples of business success in a difficult environment. The success of local businesses Andor and BubbleBum on the all-island stage will hopefully inspire even more Northern Ireland companies to enter this year to take the opportunity to highlight their good work and accomplishments.”

Strictly Come Dancing Stars headline entertainment at 2011 Woman of the Year Luncheon and Awards

Television’s ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ stars Ryan Hammond and Lindsey Muckle will perform at the 2011 Woman of the Year Luncheon and Awards. This prestigious event takes place on Friday 14th October at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole and the organizers say tickets are selling out fast.

The professional Ballroom and Latin dancers have performed together for six years and will entertain guests with a stunning show piece. Considered to be the ‘Oscar ceremony’ for female enterprise and personal achievement outside of London, the event has raised over half a million for its chosen charities.

Ryan Hammond and Lindsey Muckle became international dancing stars through partnering celebrities on South Africa’s Strictly Come Dancing television series, based on the British show of the same name. Lindsey won the competition in the fourth series.

Digital creative agency Outside Line has been recognised at the International Food and Beverage Creative Excellence Awards for the third year running following the outstanding success of its online marketing campaign for Cravendale.

The multi award-winning agency scooped the prize for the Best Website Campaign of 2011 following of its popular Make The Tea community site, which judges praised for its blend of innovation, eye-catching design and effective communication. iSLI Research Student Wins Prestigious Fellowship For The Second Year

Edinburgh, Scotland, U.K. -- A prestigious Fellowship has been awarded to one of iSLI's EngD research students, Thomas Perry. The Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 has awarded the second year its Industrial Fellowship to support his research developing new computer solutions using ultra high-performance chips called Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) as part of an alliance of high-tech organisations, including Scottish Enterprise.

Part of a multi-million pound project and through FPGA technologies, the project hopes to revolutionise the development of mission-critical applications and help deal with the massive processing requirements needed in areas such as drug design, defence, seismology, medical imaging and mobile telecoms.

The Commission's Fellowship programmes, established in 1891, have greatly benefited recipients of the award in the past, with 12 winners going on to receive Nobel prizes. Only four of these fellowships are awarded annually to students enrolled for EngD degrees. This is the second consecutive year that the Institute has hosted an EngD Industry Fellowship from the Royal Commission. In 2009, Matthew Robbetts, sponsored by Wolfson Microelectronics and supervised by Dr Stephan Weiss of the University of Strathclyde, was also selected for an award for his research into acoustic noise-cancellation techniques for mobile phone applications.

Presenting the Fellowship to Tom Perry, Mr Nigel Williams-Commission Secretary stated: "The 1851 Royal Commission is delighted to work with EngD Centres to identify top students as candidates for its Industrial Fellowship programme, which shares similar aims to support research excellence for the benefit of productive industry."

"I am truly honoured to receive such a prestigious award and be placed alongside the 1851 Commission's previous fellows. The fellowship will present new opportunities in my work including a generous travel allowance that will allow me to travel to Xilinx Research Laboratories company HQ in San Jose, where my research project is likely to depend heavily on the research conducted there and will help me achieve the very best in my EngD at iSLI. I am delighted," said Thomas Perry.

Fellowships and grants from the Royal Commission are only awarded to research students in science and engineering, applied research in industry, industrial design and other projects supporting the development of science and technology. The Commission decided to develop an idea to exclusively support students registered for the EngD degree in the UK. The Institute for System Level Integration is the only UK establishment providing the Engineering Doctorate in System Level Integration and is extremely pleased that Thomas, one of their second year research students and a graduate from the University of Cambridge, is the second consecutive iSLI student to be selected for the Fellowship.

Jumeirah, the Dubai-based luxury hospitality group and member of Dubai Holding, has been announced as the winner of a series of major industry awards. The Business Traveller awards are among the most prestigious in the hospitality sector and Jumeirah's performance was celebrated at ceremonies in London and Hong Kong.

Jumeirah was recognised in five separate travel and tourism awards categories - with three wins, a runner-up place and a top four recognition.

The hospitality group was named 'Best Business Hotel Chain in the Middle East/Africa' for the sixth consecutive year, ahead of InterContinental and Sheraton, at the Business Traveller Asia Pacific Awards.

At the Business Traveller UK awards, the Jumeirah Group was voted 'Best Business Hotel Chain in the Middle East' for the fourth year running, ahead of InterContinental, Hilton and Sheraton, and Jumeirah Emirates Towers was voted 'Best Business Hotel in the Middle East' for the seventh year in a row.
