From 1st May 2013, npower tariffs will have a single rate for each unit of energy used. Customers will also pay a fixed standing charge to cover the cost of bringing gas and electricity to their door.

Ofgem, the energy industry regulator, will be bringing new Licence Conditions into force later in the year which will mean that all energy suppliers' tariffs will have a standing charge.

Paul Massara, Group CEO, RWE npower said: "At the end of January I set out our goal to focus squarely on customers and to make the company number one in the industry for customer experience by 2015. We are responding to customers who want clear and simple energy tariffs. This announcement is the first step on the journey. We will write to our customers explaining the changes and what it means to them. Having a consistent format across all energy suppliers will help customers make the choice that is right for them.

"Getting it right for our customers is the driving force behind all that we do, now and in the future."

Some of npower's gas tariffs have seasonally weighted elements. This feature will disappear when the standing charge is introduced and npower will credit customer accounts if necessary to ensure a fair changeover. This approach has been endorsed by Consumer Focus and Ofgem has been informed.

This new structure overall reflects more closely the costs of delivering gas and electricity to customers' homes. This will mean that some lower users will end up paying a little more but the company is confident that the structure is simpler and fairer than the old npower tariffs.

The introduction of a simple standing charge is the first step in a journey which later this year will see npower reduce the number of its standard tariffs and replace them with a small number of simple tariffs that meet the new regulatory guidelines. It will be among the first of the major energy suppliers to introduce simpler tariffs for all customers on standard tariffs.

For the moment customers can stay on their existing, non-standard tariff. However the latest information suggests that new regulations will require all energy tariffs to comply with the new format during the first part of 2014.

For more information please visit www.npower.com/simpletariffs.

About npower:
npower is one of the UK's largest electricity suppliers and has 6.6 million customer accounts across the UK.

npower has been awarded platinum status in Business in the Community's CR Index and is one of 29 companies to have achieved the CommunityMark since its launch. Most of this is due to the uncertain economic climate and income holding them back from making future plans.

Despite this, 55% of small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) wish they could plan further in advance, recognising the benefits of longer-term business planning.

When asked about how they manage their energy use, nearly 60% (56%) of SMEs said they take a planned approach to their businesses' energy consumption. However, a quarter (25%) of businesses still do not implement any form of energy efficiency measures, which means they could be missing out on opportunities to plan and save.

More than 500 SMEs across the UK were questioned in the research commissioned by npower, carried out in December 2012, which looked at attitudes to business and energy planning.

For a significant percentage of SMEs (42%), the day-to-day running of a business is preventing long-term plans being made, stating that more time and resources would help make planning easier. However, 60% of small companies say being able to fix prices, such as their energy supply and other overheads would also help them to plan further ahead.

Phil Scholes, SME markets director at npower, commented: "We commissioned this research to better understand the challenges SMEs are facing when it comes to planning for their businesses' future.

"It is encouraging to see many SMEs wish they could plan further ahead. While the stability of the economy, which many SMEs cite as a key barrier to forward planning, is not something businesses can control, there are some steps they can take to help. For example, businesses may look to fix the cost of overheads where they can, such as choosing a fixed energy tariff, to help provide the certainty and confidence to plan ahead."

While the research highlights many SMEs are not planning for the future, there are some which are taking steps to keep costs in check, making planning for the long-term success of the business easier. Nearly half (41%) of SMEs questioned see energy efficiency as a key business priority, while a significant number (43%) have examined the energy marketplace and switched energy suppliers at least twice.

Phil Scholes continued: "The energy picture formed by the SMEs' responses demonstrates that, while some companies have embraced a strategy to minimise energy cost risk, as well as undertaking measures to reduce energy consumption levels and cost, many others are still not taking advantage of the solutions on offer. Addressing energy costs by switching suppliers, fixing price and embracing energy efficiency, will improve the bottom line and help small businesses plan confidently for the future."

To help SMEs plan and manage their energy costs, npower has launched its 'Fixed 1 2 3' energy tariff. It delivers unit cost stability and protects from energy unit price rises for up to three years, so it can help SMEs to plan*.

For more information on Fixed 1 2 3, please visit www.npower.com/Fixed123

- ENDS -

Notes to Editors:
*The prices will be fixed for a 1, 2, or 3 year contract period agreed with the customer and will remain fixed for the period unless information used to price the contract was incorrect or there are any legal, regulatory or third party changes or increases that occur.

About npower:
npower is one of the top energy suppliers to the UK business market, serving over 238,000 small to medium sized enterprise sites and around 17,000 industrial and commercial customers, with over 100,000 sites. npower is dedicated to helping UK businesses use energy more efficiently and therefore spend less money on their bills.

PR Contact:
Nicholas McHugh
Bridgwater Road
Worcester
WR4 9FP
0845 070 2807
www.npower.com
http://en.brinkwire.com/4212 Wed, 13 Feb 2013 12:38:56 GMT npower energy smes Npower reveals Brits baffled about history of household items
A survey released by npower shows that Brits are baffled when it comes to the history of technology, with the average guess 36 years out.

npower research showed that while many believe these life-changing gadgets came into existence in the last 50 or 60 years, many are actually more than a century old.

Take the dishwasher for example. Invented in the 1890s by Josephine Cochran, the dishwasher is a Victorian invention and has been around for more than 120 years. Yet Brits believe it was actually invented in the 1970s, more than 80 years out.

Another big misconception was central heating, which was invented in in 1889 by Edwin Rudd, but is believed to be a 1950s invention by 16% of the British public. Similarly, just 4% knew that the telephone was invented in the 1870s and just 8% identified the vacuum cleaner as an invention of the 1900s.

The research was commissioned by npower to support an online energy archive on Historypin.com called 'Remember How We Used To', which invites the public to view and share pictures of appliances through the decades.

TV's Tony Robinson, who is working with npower to promote the online energy archive on Historypin.com, commented: "We see new appliances being invented all the time and so we tend to think ourselves as the generation which has paved the way for future technology. However, a lot of new gadgets today are built on the legacy of what has come before, and it is actually the inventors of the late 1800s and early 1900s that have shaped the technological world we live in today."

Using research compiled by Warwick Business School, npower's online archive on Historypin also hosts an interactive timeline detailing the introduction of gadgets, from washing machines to games consoles, which have changed our lives over the years.

Tony Robinson added: "For the majority of us, inventions such as the television, vacuum cleaner and microwave occurred before our lifetime and so we find it hard to place these in a certain decade.

"However, by using npower’s inventions timeline, we can plot the introduction of new technology over the last 100 years and also see the subsequent effect it had on lives by browsing through the photos in the archive.

"Technology has developed at an astonishing pace, from the first telephone in the 19th century to the multi-faceted smart phones today, and so looking back at the roots of our mod-cons helps us to really appreciate what we take for granted in modern day life."

npower's online energy archive 'Remember How We Used To...' can be found at www.historypin.com/rememberhow. This is a key step in our preparation to offer Green Deal Plans in the spring.

The Green Deal is a new government scheme which is set to revolutionise the energy efficiency of British properties and reduce carbon emissions. Under the Green Deal, households will be able to benefit from energy efficiency improvements - such as loft, cavity or solid wall insulation - without the need for large up front costs, which can be a potential barrier to many consumers. Instead, the Green Deal provides a 'pay as you save' finance mechanism allowing consumers to take a loan and pay the cost back in installments through their electricity bill. Consumers can take comfort in the knowledge that, in principle, the costs that they will pay back are limited to be, on average, less than the savings they will make on their bills - the so called 'Golden Rule'.

David Titterton, Director of Green Deal Delivery and Obligations for npower energy services said: "I am delighted that we have secured official authorisation to become a Green Deal Provider. This authorisation is designed to instil confidence in consumers in undertaking their Green Deal improvements and allows us to use the official Green Deal Quality Mark.

"At npower we will be able to offer a comprehensive range of services covered by the Green Deal. We already have in place a team of experts who can provide advice on energy efficiency in the home and offer energy saving measures such as cavity wall and loft insulation. Since 2009, under previous government schemes, we’ve already installed well over one million cavity and loft insulation improvements into consumers homes and helped over twenty five thousand households to switch from coal, electric or oil heating to more energy efficient gas central heating."

To help drive demand for the Green Deal in its early stages, the government have also recently announced a Green Deal Cashback Scheme. It’s a first come first served offer where householders can claim cash back worth up to £1,000 from the government for energy efficiency improvements. It a limited offer while funds last and will be available to households from 28th January 2013.

To find out more about the Green Deal or to register interest for further information from npower, consumers can visit www.npower.com/greendeal.

About RWE npower:
RWE npower is an integrated energy business, generating electricity and supplying gas, electricity and related services to customers across the UK. There are some simple measures such as ensuring lights and equipment are switched off and that heating systems are set to reflect the changes in opening hours, which can really make a big difference.

"We'd encourage those SMEs looking to take a break this year to fully embrace this great opportunity to make some savings, and with our research revealing energy efficiency is set to increase as a business priority in 2013, why not get the year off to a good start?"

While a significant number of SMEs do not have plans in place to manage energy waste over the shut down period, some businesses have planned ahead and the research shows that switching off equipment and lights are the most popular energy saving measures for forward-thinking companies. Training is provided by the University at npower's contact centre in Houghton-le-Spring, with support provided by the business investment team at the council.

If successful, npower will endeavour to forge similar partnerships with other councils, with the aim of helping more people to build their confidence and find gainful employment whilst bolstering the energy firm’s workforce in this important customer-focused area.

Gillian Tarelli, Resource and Talent Manager at npower, said: "At npower we are passionate about helping people to reach their full potential, and so are delighted to be working with our partners in Sunderland on this project.

"We hope that this pioneering partnership can become the blueprint for similar training schemes across all of our sites in the North East, harnessing the expertise of local authorities and educational organisations along with that of our teams at npower to improve employment prospects for people around the country."

Dr Felicity Breet, associate dean in the Faculty of Education and Society at the University of Sunderland, said: "This project is about confidence building as well as competence building in working with numbers. In a contact centre role, there is the need to work at speed and under pressure, which are important factors in addition to getting the maths right.

"We have been very pleased to be involved in this initiative. At the university, it is part of our mission to offer a 'life changing experience', and what better way to help change people's lives than help them find employment."

Councillor Mel Speding, Cabinet Secretary of Sunderland City Council, said: "In Sunderland we have a contact centre industry we are very proud of, which offers opportunities to thousands of local people. Working alongside npower, we are committed to helping more people to improve their skills and confidence, so they are able to find positions and careers within the sector.

"This project is an excellent example of the City Council, university and business all coming together to help provide support and job opportunities for people in Sunderland and the North East."

About npower:
RWE npower is an integrated energy business, generating electricity and supplying gas, electricity and related services to customers across the UK. Images submitted by the public show how lives have changed over the years, particularly in the home. In the 1950s, women would spend whole days cooking and cleaning as high-tech gadgets such as washing machines, tumble dryers, microwaves and vacuum cleaners were the preserve of a lucky few***.

To examine how lives have been transformed by energy over the last 60 years, the energy supplier commissioned Warwick Business School to compile a report on the topic. Findings show that women of the 1950s spent an incredible 50 hours each week on housework - 12 more than the average full-time job today**. In comparison, women now spend just 18 hours a week on housework, 62% less than 50 years ago*.

According to Warwick Business School, these differences are largely due to mass electrification in the 1950s and the boom of labour-saving appliances in the 1960s. Homes today have three times as many appliances and gadgets compared to a typical 1950s household***.

In the 1950s, only 3% of homes had a refrigerator*** meaning that women would have to undertake food shopping on a daily basis and in the absence of a supermarket, and fresh food was bought from a number of individual shops. Meanwhile, only 7.5% of homes had the luxury of a washing machine***, meaning tubfuls of laundry were done manually and on a daily basis, while water for baths was often heated in a boiler powered by the coal fire.

Will Skillman from Warwick Business School explained: "Spending in excess of 50 hours a week** on housework is more than a full-time job, and so it's not surprising that there was less spare time for a career or hobbies for the 1950s housewife.

"Women would get up early to do an hour's housework before making the family's breakfast, and then, after walking the children to school, it would be back to the house to do the washing by hand before ironing and baking followed. The evening would be taken up with cooking the dinner and tidying up afterwards before preparing for the next day.

"The surge in appliances in the last 60 years has significantly reduced the time needed to maintain a home, resulting in an important revolution for women. Women now make up 46% of the workforce, compared to just 30% in 1952****."

"The daily routines for both men and women now are so different to that of our parents and grandparents. Today, 99% of homes have a fridge*****, 94% a washing machine*** and 92% of homes are centrally heated******. There's a risk that future generations may never know how life was before these appliances became commonplace, hence the introduction of the energy archive."

- ENDS -

Notes to editors:
All findings, unless stated otherwise, are attributed to the Warwick Business School.
*Based on a survey commissioned by npower and completed by Opinion Matters in December 2012 in which the responses of 978 UK adults (including 577 women) were recorded.
**1950 housework stats based on evidence compiled by the Cabinet Office in its paper ‘Families in Britain: An Evidence Paper’. 1950s stats calculated on a 6% decline per decade. www.education.gov.uk/publications/eOrderingDownload/Families%20Evidence%20Paper%20v0%2032%20181202.pdf
***Household appliances and the use of time: the United States and Britain since the 1920s (Bowden and Offer) onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1468--?0289.1994.tb01399.x/pdf
**** Chartered Institute or Professional Development www.cipd.co.uk/NR/rdonlyres/4C4C717A-2EDD-424E-9BD0-592367D444A6/0/5758WorkAuditWEB.pdf
*****Fashion Era www.fashion-era.com/1950s/1950s_8_society_never_had_it_so_good.htm
******Lloyds Banking Group www.lloydsbankinggroup.com/media/pdfs/research/2010/50_Years_of_Housing_UK.pdf

About npower:
npower is one of Britain's largest electricity suppliers and supplies gas, electricity and related services to 6.6 million customers across the UK. npower supplies green energy to Wembley Stadium and the Liberty Stadium in Swansea. npower is a market leader in renewable energy and sources the green energy for juice directly from renewable sources.
http://en.brinkwire.com/4136 Tue, 11 Dec 2012 09:49:48 GMT npower energy energy-supplier npower installs Solar power to save carbon
A large-scale project to install solar panels across eight of its key UK sites was completed by npower between April - July 2012.

Approximately 200 photovoltaic panels, which generate a total of 50kW of electricity, were installed at each site by npower's Business Energy Services division, while battling the wet and windy weather this summer. The installations ensure that the range of buildings, from one of npower's power stations at Little Barford in St Neots, to one of its main call centres in Houghton-le-Spring, just outside Sunderland, will benefit from reduced carbon emissions.

As solar PV is an ideal renewable energy technology for most buildings, it suited the npower premises which differed in age and location types from urban to rural surroundings and featured varying roof styles.

The new technology will help npower achieve its target of reducing the carbon emissions from its offices by 38% by 2014. It will also allow npower to generate electricity during daylight hours and export any that is unused back to the Grid, thereby saving both energy and costs. The solar PV is already having an impact on the amount of electricity the offices are taking from the Grid for power. Birch House, an npower office in Oldbury in the West Midlands, which houses around 500 employees has already seen a 16% reduction in power used from the Grid when compared to the previous year thanks to the solar PV and other measures implemented across the site.

The installation of solar PV technology is part of the company's wider commitment to energy efficiency. Other measures have included the installation of energy efficient air conditioning units, motion sensor lighting and new recycling facilities.

Dave Horton, property sustainability and capital investment manager from npower, commented: "npower is committed to reducing the environmental impact and carbon footprint of our sites. This project is designed to help us meet these aims. It is great to see the significant results achieved already at Birch House and across our other sites.

"The comprehensive planning that went into the project was really important to make sure it was completed on time and as efficiently as possible. It was particularly essential as not only did we have to install the solar PV on a variety of buildings and roof styles, we also had to contend with all the elements the great British summer weather threw at us. It also calls on businesses to act now to ensure they are protected for the future.

Three potential scenarios for the 2030 energy and economic landscape and the implications for UK business are examined in the report; from continued austerity to a sidelining of carbon emissions reduction targets in favour of cheaper energy sources to power the UK and businesses. The report shows how a number of factors will shape what 2030 will mean for UK plc.

Professor Samuel Fankhauser, author of the npower Future Report, Co-Director of the Grantham Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at The London School of Economics and Political Science and a member of the Committee on Climate Change, commented: "This report shows how fragile and delicate the equilibrium of factors is for protecting the future of the UK energy industry. A slight change of emphasis in policy, a weakening economic picture or a preference for cheaper energy sources over low carbon energy generation could result in very different operating environments for UK businesses. It is crucial UK businesses take action now to overcome the potential challenges they may face."

Volker Beckers, CEO of RWE npower, commented: "£200bn by 2020 has been the long-held figure recognised as being key to a secure energy future. However, this report shows that almost the same amount again is needed just 10 years later to provide the right environment to balance cost, carbon and continuity of supply. It is therefore crucial that the UK energy industry, Government and businesses work collaboratively to ensure this level of investment is secured and foundations are set for economic and environmental prosperity by 2030."

- ENDS -

About npower:
npower is a top business energy supplier in the UK market, providing gas and electricity to over 238,000 small to medium sized enterprise sites and around 17,000 industrial and commercial customers, with over 100,000 sites.

npower Industrial and Commercial Markets is an award-winning business energy supplier. With the Green Deal, households will be able to receive finance in the form of a loan, to help pay for energy efficiency improvements, such as loft, cavity or solid wall insulation. It works on a 'pay as you save' principle allowing consumers to repay the loan in instalments via their energy bill. Triads fall between November and February, usually between 5-6pm during cold weather spells, when industrial demand coincides with the high domestic tea-time period.

However, businesses that have TNUoS as a pass-through charge on their bill can actively manage their consumption, and therefore their costs, during these times as part of an business energy management strategy. npower offers a Triad warning service for customers, issuing a prediction of when a Triad period is likely to occur a day in advance so that businesses can make an informed choice on how to manage their consumption and reduce the impact of National Grid fees. Businesses can estimate how much they could save by responding to Triad warnings using npower’s free Triad savings calculator tool at http://bit.ly/TriadCalculator.

Wayne Mitchell, npower's industrial and commercial markets director, added: "We're always working to help businesses take control of their energy costs, and planning to manage Triads is a key part of an integrated energy strategy. npower not only issues Triad warnings a day in advance, to enable businesses to incorporate any measures into their usual energy management plans, but our online savings calculator can also help businesses work out the cost benefits of signing up to the warning service.

"npower has offered a triad warning service for over 15 years and has an excellent track record for accuracy. We would urge businesses to sign up as soon as possible, so they have the alerts in place before the cold weather begins. Only then they will be able to take full advantage of the benefits offered."

For more information on npower's Triad warning service and how your organisation can save money visit www.npower.com/triad.

- ENDS -

About npower:
npower is one of the top energy suppliers to the UK business market, serving over 238,000 small to medium sized enterprise sites and around 17,000 industrial and commercial customers, with over 100,000 sites.

npower Industrial and Commercial Markets is an award-winning business energy supplier. Putting their elders to shame, 42% of over 55s, the age group most associated with voluntary work, have never volunteered.

Despite a perceived desire to help, with 60% of all Brits saying that volunteering is important, more than one in four people aged 25-65 say they have no interest in volunteering.

This lack of action is perhaps not surprising as more than half (56%) of those questioned think people in full time employment have busier lives than those of previous generations. A staggering 60% of Brits say work commitments, their employer, or lack of time, is preventing them from getting involved in their community, whilst a third (36%) are holding off until they retire.

Bev Frain from UK volunteering charity, CSV, explained: "npower's survey highlights that Britain's youth are not worthy of their bad reputation and actually need to be applauded for the work they are doing. However, the research also highlights a gap in Britain's voluntary sector, where people of working age haven't volunteered since they were younger, citing 'lack of time' as the main obstacle for not getting involved.

"There is a significant appetite for volunteering in the UK and that's why it’s important that businesses like npower encourage volunteering through the workplace and get other age groups involved. In fact, grouping together with colleagues can be the easiest way to make a big difference without committing a huge amount of time.

"Spending just one day a year supporting a local community group, or half an hour a week mentoring young people or helping primary school children improve their literacy and numeracy skills makes a huge difference to the lives of others without taking up too much time. There's a tremendous reservoir of skill, talent and energy out there, and we want to empower people and businesses to maximise these skills to help others."

A survey of npower volunteers in 2011 revealed that 96% of those who had taken part said they felt they had made a difference and 83% felt more positive about working for the company. Meanwhile, 74% said they’d feel more motivated at work in the future.

For more about volunteering, visit www.csv.org.uk

About npower:
npower is one of Britain's largest electricity suppliers and supplies gas, electricity and related services to 6.6 million customers across the UK. npower supplies green energy to Wembley Stadium and the Liberty Stadium in Swansea. npower is a market leader in renewable energy and sources the green energy for juice directly from renewable sources, at no extra cost. npower has been awarded platinum status in Business in the Community’s CR Index and is one of 29 companies to have achieved the CommunityMark since its launch.
