CES 2018: top laptops launched

For some, the best part of a new year are the resolutions, while for others it might be the holidays. If you ask us though, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) which takes place in Las Vegas at the beginningofeach year is the reason why we look forward to January. Numerous brands from across the globe come forward andshowcase futuristic gadgetry and tech at CES every year, setting a path for future technology. This year too, brands like Samsung, LG, Dell and more revealed tons of exciting new technologies. These included a wide variety of new and enticing laptops, which is what we’re here to talk about.Here are our picks for the most scintillating laptop launches from CES 2018.

Dell XPS 13 and XPS 15

Dell XPS 13

The XPS 13 and XPS 15 are two of the most popular series from Dell, and at CES, the brand has announced upgraded models for both series with new internals and a modified design. The XPS 13 now comes furnished with a rose gold chassis and features a woven palm rest comprising nine layers of fabric. It flaunts a 13-inch 4K Infinity Edge screen, 8th-gen Intel Core processors, up to a TB of SSD storage and up to 20 hours of battery life.

Meanwhile, the XPS 15 is being toutedas the world’s most powerful 15-inch convertible, which comes with the newly-introduced 8th-gen Intel Core processorsand integrated AMD Radeon RX Vega M graphics. The highlight of the device is its new MagLev keyboard, which utilises magnets to offer tactile feedback in a portable design. The XPS 15 also supports Dell’s Active Pen stylus.

ASUS claims that the ROG G703 gaming laptop is the world’s first laptop with a 17.3-inch full HD display which is backed by Nvidia’s G-sync technology for a refresh rate of 144Hz. Under the hood, the device is powered by an Intel Core i7-7820HK processor clocked at 4.3GHz, coupled with a GTX 1080 graphics card. Another enticing feature of the laptop is its anti-dust cooling system, which helps in removal of dust particles from inside the laptop’s chassis.

Lenovo Miix 630

The Lenovo Miix 630 is a new convertiblefrom Lenovo that comes with a digital pen and boots Windows 10 S operating system. It flaunts a 12.3-inch WUXGA+ resolution (1,920 x 1,280 pixels) screen and can be used as a tablet or attached with a full-sized keyboard for a laptop experience. However, the highlight of the device is the fact that it is powered by the Snapdragon 835 SoC, with up to 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of onboard storage. With a 48WH battery inside, the device is rated to offer up to 20 hours of local video playback.

ASUS ZenBook 13

The ZenBook 13 from ASUSis a slim, light and ultra-portable offering from the brand, which comes as a competitor to the Apple MacBook lineup. It is equipped with a premium all-metal chassis, and tips the scales at just 985g. Features like Windows Hello, Modern Standby, Harman Kardon audio and Cortana are all present on the laptop. In terms of specifications, the Windows 10 laptop can be configured with 8th-gen Intel Core i7 processors, 16GB of RAM and a terabyte of superfast PCIe solid state drive.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Series

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Tablet

Lenovo unveiled a trio of new ThinkPad X1 series laptops, including the X1 Carbon, X1 Yoga and the X1 Tablet. All three devices run Windows 10 Pro, and are powered by up to 8th-gen Intel Core i7 SoCs with vPro, up to 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of PCIe SSDs. The devices play host to features like fingerprint sensors, IR cameras and Kensington locks. But what’s interesting is that they also feature the Amazon Alexa digital assistant, in addition to the optional stylus pen support.

Samsung Notebook 9 Pen

The Samsung Notebook 9 Pen is the company’s attempt at blending a laptop and a Galaxy Note smartphone. As the name suggests, the Notebook 9 Pen comes with the S Pen stylus, which has 4,096 pressure levels and a 0.7mm nib. The device sports a 360-degree rotatable hinge, which allows it to be used in multiple modes like tablet, laptop, stand and tent. Apart from this, the 13.3-incher Windows 10 machine is powered by an Intel Core i7 processor, up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage.

Special Mention – Project Linda

Although Razer’s Project Linda is actually a laptop dock for the Razer Phone rather than a laptop itself, it deserves a special mention for itsinnovativeapproach. The device comes with a 13.3-inch 120Hz QHD touchscreen and requires the smartphone to be docked where you normally find the touchpad. From there on, you can use the phone as a normal touchpad, or as a second display. The laptop dock comes with additional ports, a full size RGB keyboard and a 53.6Wh internal battery. It’s not exactly a new idea, but certainly one of the most well implemented.

And that’s not all. CES 2018 witnessed quite a few other interesting laptop launches, such as the refreshed HP Spectre x360 and the Acer Chromebook 11, among others. Do make a note however that the Indian pricing and availability details for these haven’t been disclosed yet.
