Waiters has chose to undergo season-ending surgery on his injured left ankle after receiving second opinions, Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports reports.
Waiters has not appeared for Miami since December 22. He missed the final 13 games of last season with a sprain to the same ankle, but made a decision to bypass offseason surgery because he was a free agent at the time.
Waiters, 26, has missed the past nine games because of the injury, including Wednesday night’s contest against the Pacers.
A report indicated that Waiters was contemplating getting surgery on his ankle after speaking to multiple doctors on how to proceed. He is averaging 14.3 points per game in 30 starts during his second season with Miami. He shot 39.8 percent from the field overall, including 30.6 percent from 3-point range.
The Heat have won six straight games and moved into fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings with a 24-17 record. Head coach Erik Spoelstra will likely continue to rely on Tyler Johnson, Wayne Ellington and others to fill in for Waiters.
