A man was hit over the head with a hammer and a piece of wood in a horrific attack by a group of teenagers in Wirral.

The 49-year-old was assaulted by the group, believed to be around 17-years-old, after an altercation on Greystoke Close, Upton.

The victim suffered a serious head injury and was taken to hospital following the incident at around 7.50pm on Wednesday.

He is still being treated for his injuries and is in a stable condition.

Detective Inspector Paul Parry said: “This was a nasty attack on a man near his home and while the victim suffered a serious injury to his head, he is very fortunate the injuries were not more serious.

“People in Merseyside should be allowed to go about their daily business without being subjected to an assault such as this.”

The group of teenagers were dressed in black clothing with hoods.

CCTV, witness and forensic enquiries are being carried out.
