Ajinkya Rahane to captain India for Afghanistan Test; various squads named


Mumbai: The BCCI on Tuesday (May 8) announced the 15-man squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan including Karun Nair and Kuldeep Yadav. Shreyas Iyer, who was part of the limited-overs team in South Africa, continues to be in the squad while pacer Siddarth Kaul has been handed a maiden India call-up. Why not, he has been outstanding this IPL and continues to impress, especially in death overs. Incidentally, the last Test match that he played was against Australia at Dharamasala in March, last year. The Indian squads for the Afghanistan Test, Ireland T20Is, England ODIs and T20Is along with the India A squads for England tour will be picked later today.

India are set to take on England in a three-match T20 and one-day series in July followed by a five-match Test series. While their first assignment is the historic Test match against Afghanistan, they will soon travel to England then to play a series across all the formats. And that Ishant Sharma, who is playing county as well, will be included in the Test side.

Ambati Rayudu has also been rewarded a spot in the ODI squad against England after his impressive run with the bat for the Chennai Super Kings.

Meanwhile, the report also states that Ashwin might be rested for the Afghanistan Test to give Kuldeep and Chahal a bit of red ball exposure at the highest-level ahead of the England tour, starting July 3 in Manchester.
