Aintree’s Best dressed and top outfits at day one of Grand National Festival 2018


Thousands of punters descended on Aintree racecourse for the first day of the Grand National Festival 2018.

While temperatures at Aintree were chilly , it didn’t stop everyone pulling out all the stops and raising the bar when it comes to style.

Some even proved that wearing a coat can be trendy.

While pastel colours are always a key trend with race goers, this year we have found plenty of splashes of brighter colours.

Our reporters have been out on the course spotting the best dressed among those at Aintree today – and here are their favourites.

We’ll be updating this piece throughout the day so make sure you check back to see if you or someone you know has made the cut.

1. Charlotte Bourne

Charlotte Bourne proved originality is best when it comes to Aintree.

The 22-year-old from Chester attended the race meeting today with her boyfriend and was looking forward to seeing the horses run.

Her dress is from Coast, and shoes are from Roland Cartier.

The hat she is wearing was made by her mum and her fur shawl is vintage from the 1940s.

2. Esta Haven

Race goer Estra Haren wore a jacket from Boohoo with a dress from ASOS

Esta, 22, enjoyed a day out with her work colleagues this afternoon after making the trip to Aintree from Sheffield.

She wore a dress from online retailer ASOS and a jacket from Boohoo.

She also wore a fascinator from Matalan, a bag from River Island and Primark shoes.

We love that she has helped prove you don’t need to spend a fortune to look nice.

3. Jeanette Rice

Opting for a vibrant River Island dress, 36-year-old Jeanette Rice made her annual trip to Aintree this year.

She enjoyed a day off from her job as a nurse to enjoy the racing.

Her shoes are from Lipsy and her headpiece is from Marks and Spencer.

4. Cathy Smith and Paul Smith

We love how this couple from Wirral dared to go bold with their tailoring.

Cathy Smith, 58, wore a red suit from Next while her shoes were a purchase from a holiday in Greece. Her bag is from House of Fraser.

Her husband Paul Smith, 67, wore a suit which was hand made from Birkenhead, his tie is from Tie Rack and shoes are from TM Lewin.

5. Mollie Garster and Nathan Jacks

Mollie and Nathan enjoyed their first time at the racecourse together this year.

Student Mollie, 18, from Rainhill is wearing a white dress from Lavish Alice and her shoes and bag are from ASOS.

Her boyfriend Nathan, 21, from Childwall had a day off from his job as a barber. His entire outfit is from ASOS.

6. Alex Cleator and Becci Weir

Race goers Alex Cleator and Becci Weir. Becci had a bargain find at a charity shop.

Becci, 27, who is usually busy looking after patients as part of her role as a nurse, has come to Aintree today with her boyfriend Alex who is also from Liverpool.

She is wearing a dress from Coast and her jacket was a great find from a local charity shop.

Her bag is from Primark.

Alex, 28, who is a Doctor is wearing a suit from Slaters and a tie from Ted Baker. His shoes are from Lockes.

7. Leanne Jones

Leanne Jones, 35, from Bootle was at Aintree today with her husband.

She wore a dress from high end store Reiss and shoes from Office and her bag is from a clothing boutique.

8. Sarah Bouring

Racegoer Sarah Bouring certainly wasn't boring with this daring fashion choice

Sarah may be Bouring by name, but she definitely isn’t boring by nature.

The 28-year-old travelled from Wrexham and wore a dress from Liverpool-based company Very. Her fascinator is from Debenhams and her shoes are from River Island.

She told the ECHO: “I just love the atmosphere and the whole dressing up aspect of Aintree.”

9. Caroline Wilson and Mark Douglas

This couple were looking great on the opening day of Aintree.

Caroline’s jumpsuit is from Very while her hat is actually 35 years old and was originally her mum’s.

The 43-year-old from Rainhill couldn’t remember where her shoes are from and her bag is vintage.

Mark, 48, also from Rainhill is wearing a blazer from TK Maxx, trousers from Burton and a tie and shoes from Next.

This is the first time they both have attended the race meeting.

10. Christine Bolger and Billy Bolger

It looks like dressing like a power couple is a big trend at Aintree this year.

We spotted 61-year-old Christine and 63-year-old Billy, both from Widnes during the first day of the festival.

Christine is wearing a River Island dress with a coat from Zara.

Her shoes are from Clarks and her bag is from Marks and Spencer.

11. Ellie Hoare

We spotted Ellie, 32 from Aintree while she was in the middle of taking a selfie with her friends, which was indicator of how much she enjoyed the first day of AIntree.

Ellie’s dress is from ASOS and her bag is from Monsoon while her shoes are from online retailer Missguided.

Speaking to the ECHO she said: “I always like to come for the dressing up side of things.

“It’s nice to put on a dress and come down here with your friends.

“The atmosphere is great too.”

12. Sophie Mills

One of our favourite looks for the races is a suit, so we were delighted when we spotted 25-year-old Sophie MIlls.

Her green suit is from H&M and her top is from ASOS. The shoes she wore were from River Island.

She was spending the day with her boyfriend.

When we spoke to her, she said: “We live in London but always make sure we come up for Aintree.

“We love it.”
