Liverpool’s Champions League fate rests in hands of familiar foe

Liverpool’s quest for a sixth European Cup will be in the hands of the man who inadvertently helped the Reds to their fifth in Istanbul.

Andriy Shevchenko, who famously failed to beat Jerzy Dudek from 12 yards to give Liverpool victory over AC Milan in 2005, has been named a UEFA Champions League final ambassador for the showpiece event in Kiev.

The Ukrainian legend was tasked with plucking the balls out of the pot at the quarter-final stage, and had seemed to do his former adversaries a real disservice by pairing Jurgen Klopp’s side with Manchester City.

Roma's supposed 'leak'

But after a stunning 5-1 aggregate win over the Premier League leaders, Liverpool now await their semi-final fate, with Roma, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich their possible opponents.

And it will be Shevchenko once more ‘helping out with the draw’ – as per UEFA’s description – in his capacity of ambassador.

Xabi Alonso had paired Liverpool with Porto in the last 16.

The draw will take place at midday on Friday, with ties taking place on April 24/25 and May 1/2.
